XRP Sees Record Weekly Surge as US Treasury Buybacks Fuel Yield Curve Control Hopes

XRP, the payments-focused cryptocurrency, has experienced a remarkable surge this week, as the U.S. Treasury's announcement to double its long-duration bond buyback operations sparked market speculation about potential yield curve control (YCC). Since Monday, XRP has climbed 51% to $1.50, marking its strongest weekly performance since November 2024. This rally positioned XRP as a significant outperformer, surpassing the gains of major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) during the broader market recovery.

The U.S. Treasury announced that from September 9 to November 4, it would conduct multiple long-duration (10- to 30-year) bond buyback operations, totaling at least $4 billion each. This amount is double the previous $2 billion cap. While primarily a liquidity management operation in the world's largest bond market, the timing of this announcement was widely interpreted by market participants as an effort to cap rising bond yields. Yields on longer-duration bonds had reached their highest levels since 2007 earlier this week, posing challenges for burgeoning fiscal debt and discouraging risk-taking in financial markets.

This Treasury action triggered a widespread 'risk-on' sentiment across the cryptocurrency market and fueled a massive short squeeze. According to Coinglass data, nearly $2 billion worth of short positions were liquidated this week. XRP's 51% gain, outperforming Bitcoin's 22% and Ethereum's 30% increases, indicated robust interest in the asset. Furthermore, positive sentiment was bolstered by reports of former U.S. President Donald Trump meeting with Ripple's CEO at the White House, urging Congress to pass the CLARITY Act, a bill aimed at clarifying crypto asset regulations.

Notably, November 2024 also saw a substantial rally for XRP, with prices soaring over 400%. That period's surge was attributed to several positive developments, including a favorable court ruling in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) lawsuit against Ripple, stating XRP was not a security, the anticipation of Ripple's stablecoin (RLUSD) launch, and filings for XRP-based exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Yield curve control (YCC) is an aggressive monetary easing tool where a central bank sets a ceiling for longer-duration bond yields and commits to buying as many bonds as needed to maintain that ceiling. Both the Bank of Japan and the U.S. Federal Reserve have pursued YCC in the past to support risk-taking in financial markets. The U.S. Treasury's recent bond buyback announcement is perceived by market participants as a potential precursor or related measure to YCC, thereby increasing demand for risk assets.

Analysts are cautiously optimistic about the sustainability of XRP's strong performance this week. While some technical indicators suggest short-term overbought conditions, the U.S. Treasury's liquidity injection and increasing expectations for regulatory clarity in the crypto space could continue to positively influence overall market sentiment. However, investors are advised to remain vigilant regarding potential corrections and to consider market volatility.
