XRP Ledger's 2028 Roadmap: Ripple's Four-Phase Quantum Upgrade

Ripple has published a four-phase roadmap to prepare the XRP Ledger (XRPL) to withstand risks posed by future quantum computers, targeting full readiness by 2028. The company frames the work as a practical migration path to protect accounts, signatures and the broader ledger architecture against advancing cryptographic threats.

The plan begins with research and infrastructure changes, then moves to testing NIST-recommended post-quantum schemes, followed by validator-level trials and hybrid signature implementations, and concludes with a full transition to post-quantum signatures aimed for 2028. Ripple said it will build proof-of-concept implementations, run DevNet benchmarks and prototype a post-quantum custody wallet as part of the rollout.

Market reaction was muted: XRP’s market price showed only modest movement around the announcement, trading in the roughly $1.3–$1.4 range according to on-chain and market data. Observers interpret the announcement as a long-term infrastructure investment rather than an immediate price catalyst.

The initiative fits into a broader industry trend of preparing distributed ledgers for post-quantum cryptography. Ripple’s scope extends beyond signature algorithms to consider zero-knowledge primitives and homomorphic encryption that could support privacy-preserving tokenisation and compliance features for institutional use.
