XRP Ledger 3.3.0 Upgrade: Critical Bug-Fixed Features Return

The XRP Ledger's (XRPL) xrpld 3.3.0 release, featuring five new protocols, is set for next week. Among these improvements, the 'Batch' and 'Permission Delegation' features, previously withdrawn due to critical security vulnerabilities, are being reintroduced after comprehensive fixes.

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is poised to release its significant software upgrade, xrpld 3.3.0, next week, aiming to bolster its infrastructure and enhance its suitability for institutional adoption. This update will reintroduce key features such as 'Batch' and 'Permission Delegation' with corrected versions, after they were previously pulled due to critical security bugs. RippleX Head of Product, Jazzi Cooper, announced this development on July 31, framing the update as a significant leap forward for tokenized asset use cases including global transfers, trading, collateralization, and settlement.

The update encompasses five core protocol amendments: Confidential Multi-Purpose Tokens (Confidential MPT), Batch (BatchV1_1), Permission Delegation, Sponsored Fees and Reserves, and Dynamic Multi-Purpose Tokens (Dynamic MPT). The 'Batch' amendment, for instance, had reached the validator voting phase in February 2026, but a bug bounty program identified a critical signature validation flaw that could have allowed unauthorized transaction execution. Consequently, Ripple entirely withdrew this improvement and disabled it in version 3.1.1. 'Permission Delegation' was similarly withdrawn in September 2025, following the discovery of a bug that could allow one account to charge transaction fees to another, potentially draining its balance.

Crucially, both security vulnerabilities were identified during testing and voting phases, before they went live on the mainnet, ensuring no funds were lost. The reintroduced 'Batch' (BatchV1_1) feature enables the atomic execution of up to eight cross-account transactions within a single ledger entry (all or nothing), while 'Permission Delegation' allows institutions to authorize specific transaction permissions without ceding full account control. For these amendments to activate on the XRPL, they require at least 80% approval from XRPL validators, sustained over two consecutive weeks.

This upgrade aims to make the XRP Ledger more appealing to financial institutions and enterprise applications. Notably, the 'Confidential MPT' feature introduces zero-knowledge proofs for private token balances and transfer amounts, addressing a significant barrier for financial institutions considering public blockchain infrastructure. Furthermore, the 'Sponsored Fees and Reserves' feature will allow institutions to cover XRP transaction fees and reserve requirements on behalf of their users. This could streamline onboarding for new users but might also impact direct XRP demand by reducing the need for individuals to acquire XRP for network interaction.

In the broader crypto market, there's increasing competition among blockchain networks to attract institutional tokenization projects. Financial firms are actively seeking blockchain technology to tokenize traditional assets—such as bonds, real estate, and equities—for payment and cost reduction purposes. Such improvements on XRPL are designed to remove technical and legal obstacles that have historically deterred traditional financial giants from engaging with public blockchains. In this context, XRP Ledger's updates are paving the way for wider adoption of tokenized assets and real-world assets (RWAs).

Analysts and market observers are closely monitoring the validator approval process for these new amendments. The prior rejection of the 'Batch' protocol suggests that validators might approach its re-evaluation with increased caution. While the upgrade is expected to enhance the XRP Ledger's long-term reliability and development scalability, its immediate impact on XRP's price remains uncertain. XRP has recently consolidated around $1.06 and experienced slight dips ahead of the upgrade. The potential for the 'Sponsored Fees and Reserves' feature to reduce individual XRP demand is a development that will be closely watched by the market.
