Whirlpool: Iran war triggers recession-level slump; shares down 20%

Whirlpool said in its May 6 first-quarter release that the war in Iran produced a "recession-level" industry decline in the U.S., with consumer confidence collapsing in late February through March.

The company reported Q1 net sales of $3.273 billion, a 9.6% year-on-year decline, and a GAAP net loss attributable to common shareholders of $85 million; GAAP diluted loss per share was $1.43. Management flagged that North America major appliance volumes fell sharply, particularly in March.

Whirlpool updated its 2026 outlook, accelerated pricing and cost actions and said it will prioritize debt reduction—including plans to cut more than $900 million of debt—and suspend the common dividend to conserve cash and shore up the balance sheet. These steps underscore a shift toward liquidity preservation amid the demand shock.

The market reacted swiftly: Whirlpool shares plunged in after-hours and premarket trading, with reports of intraday declines in the mid-to-high teens and as much as about 20% in some sessions. Investors appear focused on the earnings miss, cash-flow shortfall and the implications of a suspended dividend for income-focused holders.

On the macro side, University of Michigan consumer sentiment readings and other surveys showed a dramatic fall in confidence in April, linked by many economists to higher energy prices and geopolitical uncertainty stemming from the Iran conflict—factors that dampen big-ticket discretionary purchases like home appliances.

Analysts say near-term recovery will depend on stabilization of consumer sentiment and energy markets; Whirlpool's planned price increases and cost takeouts may protect margins, but volumes and working capital trends will determine whether guidance is achievable in the coming quarters.
