Wheat Futures Close Higher on Friday Amid Market Rally

Global commodity markets saw wheat futures contracts rally across all three major exchanges on Friday, concluding the week with notable gains. Chicago Soft Red Winter (SRW) wheat contracts rose between 7 and 9 cents, although the September contract registered a weekly decline of 1 3/4 cents. Kansas City Hard Red Winter (HRW) futures posted stronger gains, up 13 to 15 cents, with its September contract ending the week higher by ½ cent. Minneapolis spring wheat contracts also closed 8 to 9 cents higher, with the September contract gaining 6 ½ cents for the week.

This market activity unfolded against the backdrop of the weekly Commitment of Traders (COT) data. The report indicated that managed money in Chicago Board of Trade (CBT) wheat futures and options increased their net short position by 16,906 contracts in the week ending August 4, bringing the total to 23,786 contracts. Conversely, in Kansas City wheat, managed money trimmed 139 contracts from their net long position, which now stands at 33,094 contracts. These divergent positions reflect varying market sentiment among participants.

The upward movement in wheat prices was significantly supported by ongoing shipping uncertainties and conflicts in the Black Sea region. Heightened attacks on Ukrainian ports and vessels have kept concerns about grain export flows alive, exerting upward pressure on prices. Export Sales data released on Thursday showed total wheat sales for the marketing year at 7.277 million metric tons (MMT), a 29% drop from the same period last year. This figure represents 35% of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecast, lagging behind last year's pace of 44%.

The French Ministry of Agriculture estimated the French soft wheat crop at 31.9 MMT, a marginal decrease of just 0.1 MMT from the previous month. This indicates no significant shift in the European supply outlook. A tender by Algeria on Wednesday, which saw an estimated purchase of 720,000 MT of wheat, also marked a notable development on the global demand side.

Looking ahead, market attention will turn to the monthly Crop Production report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), scheduled for release on Wednesday. Analysts surveyed by Reuters anticipate total wheat production to be 1.525 billion bushels (bbu), an 11 million bushel cut from July if realized. Winter wheat production is expected to decline by 9 million bushels to 981 million bushels, while spring wheat is forecast to slip by 7 million bushels to 468 million bushels. This report could provide fresh insights into the supply-demand balance and influence the trajectory of wheat prices in the coming period.
