Western Union Brings Stablecoin Remittances to Visa Network with Stablecard
Western Union has launched Stablecard in 37 markets in partnership with Rain. This digital wallet and Visa card allow users to securely hold and spend U.S. dollar value via the USDPT stablecoin, targeting remittance recipients in economies with volatile local currencies.

Global remittance giant Western Union (NYSE: WU) has launched a new product called Stablecard in 37 markets, in a strategic partnership with Rain. This innovative digital wallet and Visa-backed secured credit card enable consumers to securely hold, move, and spend U.S. dollar value globally. The initiative specifically targets markets where local currencies are unstable and demand for stablecoins is already visible.
Stablecard operates with USDPT (U.S. Dollar Payment Token), Western Union's own stablecoin. Issued by Anchorage Digital Bank N.A. on the Solana blockchain, USDPT is pegged one-to-one with the U.S. dollar and is fully backed by reserves including cash, U.S. Treasury bills, and other cash-equivalent assets. Users can receive Western Union money transfers directly into their USDPT wallet, spend balances anywhere Visa is accepted, both online and in physical stores, and even add their card to Apple Pay and Google Pay. The platform also facilitates transferring USDPT to and from compatible digital asset wallets and exchanges.
Devin McGranahan, President and CEO of Western Union, stated that this move is part of the company's efforts to make global financial services more accessible to its customers. McGranahan remarked, “By combining the stability of a dollar-backed digital asset with the scale of Western Union's global network and Visa's acceptance footprint, we're giving consumers a new way to hold value, move money and spend confidently across borders.” Farooq Malik, CEO and Co-founder of Rain, emphasized that Western Union is putting stablecoin efficiency into the hands of people who have never thought about on-chain money.
This development offers a significant solution, particularly for remittance recipients in countries experiencing high inflation and local currency fluctuations. Recipients can protect their earnings by holding dollar-denominated value without converting to local currency. In 2025, Western Union facilitated $107.4 billion in cross-border principal across 285.9 million consumer money transfer transactions. Stablecard expands the company's digital payment strategy by leveraging this extensive network into the stablecoin-based consumer payments market.
Western Union's action reflects a broader trend of traditional financial institutions embracing digital assets and stablecoins as payment instruments. Following USDPT's launch in May as a settlement asset for the company's global payment network, the introduction of Stablecard marks its first consumer-facing use, bringing this infrastructure directly to customers. This integration bridges traditional money transfer with blockchain technology, holding the potential to enhance financial inclusion.
The company aims to expand Stablecard services to over 60 markets by the end of the year. Analysts suggest that Western Union's initiative could accelerate the mainstream adoption of stablecoin payments and modernize the company's business model. This strategic step reinforces the central role of stablecoins in the future of global money movement and is considered a key part of Western Union's digitalization efforts.
