Legendary investor Warren Buffett has broken a long-standing tradition, announcing that he has excluded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation from his annual stock donations this year. According to an announcement from Berkshire Hathaway, approximately $6 billion worth of stock donations will instead be directed to four different foundations associated with Buffett's family. This decision marks the first time in two decades that Buffett has not made a direct contribution to the Gates Foundation.

Berkshire Hathaway stated on Tuesday that Buffett would convert 8,000 Class A shares into 12 million Class B shares, with a significant portion of these shares being donated to family foundations. Specifically, 9 million Class B shares will go to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, while 1 million Class B shares each will be directed to the Sherwood Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and the Novo Foundation. This redirection signals a notable shift in Buffett's philanthropic strategy.

The primary reason behind the exclusion of the Gates Foundation from the donations is reportedly an ongoing review into the foundation's past ties to Jeffrey Epstein. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Buffett had delayed his decision regarding further donations to the Gates Foundation while awaiting the findings of this review. In an interview with CNBC, Buffett stated that he had not spoken with Bill Gates since “the whole thing was unveiled” and did not wish to be in a position to be called as a witness in the ongoing investigation.

Since 2006, Warren Buffett has been one of the largest benefactors of global philanthropy, having donated over $47 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway shares to the Gates Foundation. While this new decision may not directly impact the value of Berkshire Hathaway shares, it is expected to have significant repercussions within the philanthropic world and on the future of the Gates Foundation. Berkshire Hathaway's Class B shares have outperformed the broader U.S. market over the past year.

Looking ahead, Warren Buffett aims to dispose of all his remaining Berkshire shares by December 31, 2034. This indicates an acceleration of Buffett's philanthropic commitment and his desire to entrust the management of his remaining wealth to his children. Analysts suggest that this decision could trigger a potential shift in large-scale philanthropic strategies and further elevate the role of family foundations. The Gates Foundation, for its part, has announced that it has commissioned a law firm to review its past interactions.
