Vitalik Buterin Outlines Key Priorities for 'Lean Ethereum' Roadmap

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has publicly shared the main priorities of the "Lean Ethereum" roadmap, which outlines the blockchain network's future technical direction. According to Buterin's statements, quantum resistance, scalability, and privacy form the core of this strategic plan, set to cover the remainder of the decade. This transformation is anticipated to be as extensive as the "Merge" upgrade in September 2022.

In an announcement made via the social media platform X, Buterin stated that these planned upgrades are expected to roll out gradually over the next three to four years, impacting nearly every layer of Ethereum. He emphasized that quantum safety has significantly moved up in priority, noting that finalizing a quantum-safe solution for "blobs" has become an urgent need. Buterin also added that privacy is now treated as a "first-class goal," no longer an optional add-on for niche use cases.

In this context, Buterin is also advocating for the development of a new virtual machine (VM), such as leanISA or RISC-V, to support programmable privacy and improved scalability. This new virtual machine could potentially replace or significantly upgrade the existing Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) architecture. Such a change aims to enhance performance by enabling the network to manage transaction volumes and smart contract workloads more efficiently.

The "Lean Ethereum" roadmap coincides with a period of organizational changes at the Ethereum Foundation. The Foundation laid off approximately 20% of its staff last month in an effort to become leaner and reduce its budget by 40%. This restructuring follows several executive and protocol contributor departures in recent months, adding an extra layer of significance to Buterin's "lean" themed plan.

Despite this ambitious roadmap, some market analysts express skepticism regarding Buterin's proposed 3-4 year timeline. Figures like crypto analyst Ignas Fiodorovas have voiced doubts about the Ethereum Foundation's ability to complete all upgrades within the stated period, given its history of missed deadlines. Some researchers, however, suggest that artificial intelligence technologies could accelerate development processes, potentially allowing these upgrades to be completed within a year. Additionally, the absence of improvements in ETH tokenomics from the roadmap is also among the criticized points.
