Vestas Wind Systems Shares Surge on Strong Earnings and Margin Upgrade
Vestas Wind Systems reported robust second-quarter earnings and improved profitability, leading the company to raise its full-year margin guidance. This strong performance triggered a significant jump in the company's shares.
Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems pleased investors by announcing better-than-expected financial results for the second quarter of 2026. The company recorded significant improvements in both its profit and profitability margins, driven by strong project execution and operational leverage. Following this successful performance, Vestas announced an upgrade to its full-year profit margin outlook and initiated a new €400 million share buyback program.
Vestas' second-quarter revenue surged by 26% year-over-year to €4.7 billion. The EBIT (Earnings Before Interest and Taxes) margin before special items expanded significantly to 9.4%, an improvement of nearly eight percentage points from 1.5% in the same period last year. The company's earnings per share (EPS) climbed 46% to €1.11. Net profit reached €285 million, while wind turbine order intake increased by 67% to 3.3 gigawatts (GW), valued at approximately €3.4 billion.
This robust growth was primarily supported by a 37% increase in sales within the Power Solutions segment. Management attributed this improvement to operating leverage, excellent project execution, and lower-than-expected project costs across both onshore and offshore operations. The company's combined order and service backlog reached €76.9 billion, establishing a solid foundation for future revenues.
Vestas' strong second-quarter results and upgraded profit margin guidance were positively received by the markets. The company's shares surged by as much as 19% after the announcement, marking their largest jump since July 2022 and approaching their 52-week high. Investors welcomed the company's progress in its turnaround efforts after years of struggling with profitability amidst rising costs.
The critical role of the wind energy sector at the intersection of energy security, sustainability, and affordable energy creates a strong demand environment for companies like Vestas. Regulatory developments, such as reformed permitting rules in Germany, are leading to an increase in wind farm installations in Europe's largest energy market, further supporting Vestas' growth. However, the sector continues to face challenges, including ongoing permitting processes, trade volatility, and supply chain disruptions.
Analysts have increased their fair value estimates for Vestas' stock following the company's much better-than-expected second-quarter performance. Positive forecasts for the company's future earnings and revenue growth are anticipated. Vestas CEO Henrik Andersen stated that the demand for wind energy solutions remains strong due to the growing need for secure, affordable, and sustainable energy, providing a favorable environment for the company to continue its growth trajectory.
