The American stock market is demonstrating remarkable resilience, largely offsetting recent pullbacks in artificial intelligence (AI)-focused stocks with overall market performance. Despite intense investment in AI technology sparking concerns, the market is maintaining its balance with support from other sectors, once again highlighting the U.S. economy's ability to weather market bubbles.

In recent weeks, sharp sell-offs have been observed in AI-related stocks, particularly among chipmakers like Micron Technology (MU), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Applied Materials (AMAT). South Korea's Kospi index even fell by 10.8% due to drops in SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, leading to trading halts. While the Nasdaq Composite experienced declines of up to 9.3% from its record high last month, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average continued to rise, bolstered by strong earnings from other companies.

This pullback stems from growing concerns about the sustainability and returns of AI investments. Analysts are questioning whether AI can deliver the promised profits and productivity, noting that lower-cost Chinese AI models could reduce demand for memory and computing power. However, some experts interpret this retreat as a reset in expectations or profit-taking, rather than a fundamental deterioration of the sector's dynamics.

The most prominent market impact is the concentration risk around AI stocks. As AI superstar stocks have grown significantly, their movements wield greater influence on indices like the S&P 500, affecting overall market performance. Nevertheless, robust earnings from companies such as Coca-Cola (KO), Sherwin-Williams (SHW), and Illinois Tool Works (ITW) suggest that the market can find support in other areas, indicating that sectoral rotation could be beneficial for overall market health.

The resilience of the U.S. economy is also supported by its history of navigating market bubbles. During the dot-com bubble, the Nasdaq Composite plummeted by approximately 80%, and the S&P 500 lost 50%. Currently, the Shiller P/E ratio reaching 40, near the peaks of 1929 and 1999, signals a potential market bubble formation. However, the innovative momentum of AI and potential productivity gains lead some analysts to differentiate the current situation from past bubbles.

Analysts and market expectations are divided. While some strategists believe the current situation is a mid-cycle slowdown in the AI trade, indicative of healthy market rotation, others warn of a potential 20% correction for the S&P 500 or an even more severe bust than the dot-com bubble. Yet, the generally strong corporate earnings and growth potential in non-AI sectors offer hope that the U.S. stock market can weather this volatility as well.
