U.S. stock index futures showed limited change on Monday morning as investors awaited new signals from the Federal Reserve (Fed) regarding its monetary policy. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures (YM00), S&P 500 futures (ES00), and Nasdaq-100 futures (NQ00) traded mostly flat. Market participants are adopting a cautious stance ahead of key data releases and statements from Fed officials this week.

Last week, Wall Street concluded with a generally positive performance. The S&P 500 index (SPX) rose 0.4%, reaching a new record high, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP) gained 0.1%. However, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) slipped 0.6% for the week. Investors' focus will be on the minutes from the July 29 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, due to be released on Wednesday, and the annual Jackson Hole symposium, which begins on August 27. These events are expected to provide more clarity on the future trajectory of the Fed's interest rates.

While inflation concerns remain on the market's agenda, recent data provided some relief. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for July showed only a slight increase, and producer prices remained unchanged. This somewhat alleviated expectations for an immediate rate hike. However, inflation persisting above the Fed's 2% target continues to put pressure on the central bank. According to CME's FedWatch tool, the probability of a September rate hike declined to approximately 33% on Monday, down from 50-67% a week prior. J.P. Morgan Global Research anticipates the first 25 basis point rate hike could occur in December.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's preference for providing less forward guidance than his predecessor, Jerome Powell, is contributing to increased market uncertainty. Warsh's mandate of five task forces to review the Fed's policymaking process also stands out as another factor that could influence future policies. This situation prompts investors to focus more closely on economic data and interpret clues from the Fed's communication more carefully.

Although there are no major economic reports scheduled for release this week, investors will closely monitor upcoming earnings reports from the retail sector. Financial results from major retailers such as Home Depot (HD), Lowe's (LOW), Target (TGT), and Walmart (WMT) could offer significant insights into consumer sentiment amidst the inflationary environment. Furthermore, concerns about the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure buildout to drive up costs across various sectors are also in focus. In energy markets, oil prices rose following an oil tanker attack in the Strait of Hormuz. West Texas Intermediate crude (CL.1) climbed 0.4% to around $82.64 a barrel, while global benchmark Brent crude (BRN00) settled at $88.52. Despite this, Oxford Economics analysts expect Brent prices to remain in the mid-$80s through year-end.

Moving forward, the market's direction will largely be determined by the Fed's actions. Messages from the Jackson Hole meeting and the FOMC minutes could reshape interest rate expectations. Analysts will closely watch the Fed's strategy to balance its commitment to combating inflation with efforts to support economic growth. Expectations suggest that volatility resulting from the Fed's less communicative approach may persist in the markets.
