Axiom Biosciences, a US-based biotechnology company, has announced its intention to pursue a primary initial public offering (IPO) on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) in 2027, charting a different course from the traditional Wall Street path. The San Diego-headquartered firm aims to be the first US biotech company to primarily list in Hong Kong. This unconventional strategy highlights evolving dynamics in the global financing landscape and the growing appeal of Asian markets.

Dr. Remo Moomiaie-Qajar, CEO and Founder of Axiom Biosciences, stated that a primary listing in Hong Kong is expected to raise between $150 million and $200 million to accelerate the company’s regenerative medicines pipeline. Axiom already has established ties with Asian partners, including South Korea-based Medinno and Seoul-based investor Partners Investment. Moomiaie-Qajar emphasized that Hong Kong's capital market possesses deep biotechnology expertise and a strong appetite for clinical-stage innovation. Axiom believes a Hong Kong listing will be more advantageous than current US markets and plans a secondary US listing on Nasdaq in 2029.

Behind this strategic decision are Hong Kong's accommodating listing rules, such as Chapter 18C, which allows pre-revenue biotech companies to list, aiming to attract innovative firms. Axiom's lead regenerative therapy targets severe brain injuries in newborns, specifically intraventricular hemorrhage and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Recently released Phase 1 clinical data showed promising results, reporting a 0% mortality rate over two years in nine newborns. These successful clinical outcomes were a significant trigger for the company's decision to go public.

Globally, biotech firms are increasingly drawn to Hong Kong due to its expanding investor base and proximity to Chinese pharmaceutical partners. Hong Kong is positioning itself not merely as a financial gateway to China but as a life sciences platform that integrates global capital, regulatory efficiency, and clinical development. This trend reflects the rising demand for healthcare and biotechnology innovation across Asia.

Analysts and market observers believe Hong Kong offers a more mature and understanding market for biotechnology companies. Healthcare firms listed in Hong Kong have reportedly outperformed their Nasdaq counterparts in recent years. Axiom's pioneering move could open a new funding pathway for US biotech firms, encouraging them to look beyond traditional avenues for capital raising. This strategy has the potential to be emulated by other American innovators in the coming period.
