Upstart Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: UPST), the artificial intelligence (AI) lending marketplace, announced robust financial results for the second quarter of 2026, driven by AI model enhancements that reaccelerated growth in its core personal lending business. The company's revenue and adjusted EBITDA exceeded market expectations, leading to a 13% surge in its stock during after-hours trading.

For the three months ended June 30, 2026, Upstart reported total revenue of $365 million, marking a 42% increase year-over-year and surpassing analyst estimates of $362 million tracked by FactSet. Paul Gu, CEO of Upstart, described the results as "exactly the quarter we hoped for," emphasizing the strong progress in the core personal loan business. Upstart originated 558,014 loans totaling $4.23 billion during the quarter, representing a 50% year-over-year increase and a 23% sequential rise. Net income also saw a significant jump of 195% year-over-year, reaching $16.5 million, up from $5.6 million in Q2 2025.

The company stated that it enhanced its AI-powered lending models to better differentiate between low-risk and high-risk borrowers. These improvements have enabled Upstart to conduct more accurate risk assessments throughout the lending process. This long-standing strategy allows the company to approve more applicants at lower Annual Percentage Rates (APRs) compared to traditional credit models. Furthermore, Upstart achieved an all-time high contribution profit of $193.1 million, and its adjusted EBITDA climbed 45% year-over-year to $76.9 million, exceeding analyst expectations.

Upstart has continued its strategy of funding growth without issuing new equity, relying instead on a substantial amount of third-party capital. The company secured over $4 billion in new committed capital year-to-date, and the proportion of loans held on its balance sheet relative to total outstanding loans declined to 5.9%, its lowest level in nearly two years. All of Upstart's private-credit partners reportedly renewed their arrangements, often signing longer-term and larger deals, underscoring the strength of the company's capital platform and funding successes.

However, CEO Paul Gu noted that July loan originations decreased to $1.40 billion from $1.50 billion in June, indicating the company is facing "a little bit of a macro headwind." The Upstart Macro Index (UMI) also rose to 1.50 as of August 3, reaching its highest level since January 2026. This suggests an elevated default risk, approximately 50% above what Upstart would expect in a normal economy. Despite these macroeconomic challenges, the company reaffirmed its full-year 2026 guidance, expecting approximately $1.4 billion in revenue and $294 million in adjusted EBITDA.

Analysts highlight the long-term potential of Upstart's AI-driven business model. The company's ability to assess credit with an accuracy that traditional scoring methods cannot match offers significant growth potential in newer product segments such as auto and home loans. Despite tightening financial conditions in the market, Upstart's robust credit performance and third-party funding partnerships provide a strong foundation for future expansion. Considering the company's capital efficiency and operational leverage, an improvement in profit margins is anticipated in the coming period.
