Unitree Robotics' Blockbuster IPO Propels Founder Among China's Richest Tech Moguls

Unitree Robotics (Yushu Technology), a symbol of China's ascent in humanoid robot technology, made a striking initial public offering (IPO) on the Shanghai STAR Market, with its shares surging over 600% on its first trading day. This extraordinary performance rapidly propelled the company's market capitalization into billions of dollars, simultaneously placing its 36-year-old founder and CEO, Wang Xingxing, among China's youngest billionaires.

Unitree Robotics shares opened at 1,100 yuan, significantly above their IPO price of 150.80 yuan, attracting immense investor interest. Although the stock pared some of its gains during the day, it traded at around 883.9 yuan by midday, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately 357 billion yuan (about US$66 billion). Valued at around 61 billion yuan prior to the IPO, the company's market value increased nearly sixfold following its debut. Wang Xingxing's direct and indirect stake of approximately 30-31% in the company boosted his net worth to over 107 billion yuan, equivalent to roughly US$16 billion.

The IPO garnered record-breaking demand from retail investors, being oversubscribed more than 8,000 times, setting a new benchmark for Shanghai's STAR Market. Unitree raised approximately 6.1 billion yuan (US$904 million) by selling 40.45 million shares. A substantial portion of these proceeds is earmarked for the development of embodied artificial intelligence (AI) models, robot research, new product programs, and the expansion of manufacturing capabilities. The company successfully increased its revenue to 1.7 billion yuan in 2025, with net profit reaching 278 million yuan and a gross margin exceeding 60%.

Unitree's market entry coincided with a period of broader market declines, as the STAR Market Composite Index fell by 6.1% and the benchmark Shanghai Composite dropped by 2%. The substantial increase in Unitree's stock price, despite the overall market downturn, highlights investor confidence in the humanoid robot sector and its significant growth potential. The company's success also aligned with the World Robot Conference held in Beijing, further solidifying China's leadership in robotics.

This development is seen as a crucial turning point in China's technological competition with the United States. The Beijing government is increasing its support for strategic technologies, from semiconductors to humanoid robots, with companies like Unitree at the forefront of these initiatives. The company benefits from a robust shareholder base, including investments from prominent Chinese tech firms such as Tencent, Alibaba, and DeepSeek, as well as state-backed institutions. Analysts suggest that Unitree's IPO reinforces expectations for accelerated commercialization within China's humanoid robot industry and enhanced localization opportunities across its supply chain.

Industry analysts and market expectations are now focused on how quickly humanoid robots will transition from demonstrations and pilot projects to widespread daily use. JPMorgan's forecasts, predicting global humanoid robot shipments to reach 1.75 million units by 2030, underscore the future growth potential for market leaders like Unitree. However, some experts caution that widespread commercial adoption will depend on advancements in AI models and real-world training data, warning of intensifying competition where only a few leading companies may thrive. Unitree's plan to allocate IPO proceeds towards AI and R&D will be crucial for its long-term sustainability.
