United Microelectronics Corp (UMC), Taiwan's second-largest contract chipmaker, has announced the commencement of mass production of silicon photonics wafers at its 12-inch wafer fabrication facility in Singapore. This strategic move is aimed at addressing the rapidly growing demand for high-speed optical interconnects within artificial intelligence (AI) and hyperscale data center networks. UMC's new production capability is seen as a significant indicator of the company's efforts to strengthen its position in the advanced technology market.

UMC achieved this significant milestone in collaboration with Singapore-based silicon photonics fabless firm Silith Technology, bringing the platform from development to production readiness within approximately 18 months. According to the company's statement, this partnership integrates Silith's photonics design expertise with UMC's 12-inch wafer production capacity and process capabilities. Silicon photonics chips, unlike traditional chips that use electrical signals, transmit data using light signals, enabling faster communication, greater bandwidth, and lower power consumption. The platform is designed to support 1.6 terabits per second (1.6T) solutions and has already been certified by a leading global cloud customer.

G.C. Hung, UMC Senior Vice President, emphasized that Singapore serves not only as a hub with strong 12-inch wafer manufacturing capabilities but also as a key technology development center for UMC. The company has transitioned from traditional 8-inch wafer production to more advanced 12-inch wafers, improving power efficiency and performance. This innovative approach specifically caters to the increasing need for faster communication between processors, memory units, and networking equipment in AI systems and data centers.

This development underscores the escalating demand for AI-driven high-speed connectivity solutions within the semiconductor industry. Silicon photonics technology plays a crucial role in the future of data centers and AI infrastructure. However, following the announcement, UMC's shares initially fell by nearly 5% in Taiwan trading on Tuesday, before paring losses to trade 1.6% lower. This market reaction could reflect short-term profit-taking or broader market volatility. UMC reported June revenue of NT$23.12 billion (approximately $719 million), marking a 22.9% year-on-year increase, with cumulative revenue for the first half of 2026 rising 11.3% annually.

UMC's investment in Singapore reflects a broader trend of regional diversification and strengthening within the global chip supply chain. Taiwanese semiconductor firms are increasingly viewing Singapore as an emerging semiconductor hub and expanding their manufacturing operations there. This trend is further exemplified by the plan of TSMC-backed Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp to establish a $7.8 billion chip manufacturing plant in Singapore in partnership with Dutch chipmaker NXP Semiconductors. Such investments highlight strategic positioning and the dispersion of geopolitical risks in the context of global technological competition.

Citi analysts view UMC's foray into silicon photonics as a positive signal for the company's outlook. They anticipate an improving outlook for UMC in the second half of the year, forecasting a 13% quarter-on-quarter sales increase in the second quarter of 2026 and a recovery in gross margin. This move is expected to help differentiate UMC from competitors vying in increasingly commoditized legacy chip manufacturing. The company plans to make its own 12-inch silicon photonics platform available for customer product development by 2027 and aims to launch an open silicon photonics platform by 2028. These long-term strategies support UMC's ambition to become a leading player in the growing market for high-speed connectivity solutions in the AI era.
