The United Kingdom government has taken a significant economic step to ease summer holiday expenses for families across the country and mitigate rising cost of living pressures. Under the new "Great British Summer Savings" program, the Value Added Tax (VAT) rate on specific family activities and children's menu meals will be temporarily reduced from 20% to 5%, effective from June 25 to September 1, 2026. This temporary tax cut is also aimed at supporting the leisure and hospitality sectors.

Announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves on May 21, 2026, this measure will apply to various attractions such as cinemas, theaters, concerts, theme parks, zoos, adventure parks, and soft play centers. Additionally, children's menu meals served in restaurants and cafes will also benefit from the reduced VAT rate. The program, estimated to cost around £300 million, will be funded through changes in the taxation of foreign branch profits of global oil companies. Prime Minister Keir Starmer also supported the initiative, stating it would allow families to enjoy cherished holiday moments they might otherwise have had to forego due to budget constraints.

The VAT reduction is expected to have a positive impact on the hospitality and leisure sectors. Major businesses like Merlin Entertainments (owner of Legoland), Greene King-managed pubs, and Nando's have committed to passing on the VAT savings directly to customers. This aims to boost footfall and revenue for businesses in these sectors during the summer season, while also easing pressure on household budgets. A revival in overall consumer spending is anticipated as consumers seek more affordable entertainment options.

This government move is part of broader efforts to address the cost of living crisis, which has been exacerbated by global events, including the conflict in the Middle East impacting global supply chains and energy markets. Alongside other previously announced measures such as a freeze on fuel duty, support for energy bills, increased tax-free mileage rates, and cuts in import tariffs on over 100 food products, this VAT reduction aims to further alleviate the financial burden on families.

Market analysts and industry representatives anticipate that businesses will fully pass on the VAT savings to consumers. While industry bodies like UKHospitality have welcomed this temporary reduction, they continue to advocate for a more permanent and comprehensive VAT cut for the sector. In the coming period, the actual impact of this measure on consumer spending and sector performance will be closely monitored, and it remains to be seen whether the government will maintain similar supportive policies. The sector is expected to revert to the standard VAT rate after the policy concludes on September 1.
