Uber, Nissan and Wayve Partner to Launch Robotaxi Pilot in Tokyo
Uber, Nissan and U.K.-based autonomous driving startup Wayve have partnered to deploy robotaxi services in Tokyo. A pilot program using Nissan vehicles is targeted for late 2026.
Uber Technologies, Japanese automaker Nissan Motor and U.K.-based autonomous driving startup Wayve have announced a strategic partnership to launch robotaxi services in Tokyo. The companies plan to begin a pilot deployment of the service in late 2026 as part of broader efforts to commercialize autonomous mobility.
The pilot program will use Nissan’s electric LEAF vehicles equipped with Wayve’s artificial intelligence-based autonomous driving technology. The robotaxis are expected to operate through Uber’s ride-hailing platform, combining Uber’s global mobility network with Nissan’s vehicle manufacturing capabilities and Wayve’s self-driving software.
The initiative represents Uber’s first autonomous vehicle partnership in Japan. The company has been expanding collaborations with autonomous technology developers as it positions driverless vehicles as a key component of its long-term growth strategy.
Tokyo is considered a challenging environment for autonomous driving due to its dense traffic and complex urban road network. If the pilot proves successful, the companies aim to expand robotaxi deployments to additional cities as part of Uber and Wayve’s broader global rollout of autonomous ride-hailing services.
