Uber Launches Baidu's Fully Driverless Apollo Go Robotaxis in Dubai

Global ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER) and Chinese tech conglomerate Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU) have officially launched fully driverless Apollo Go robotaxis on the Uber platform in Dubai. This strategic partnership represents a major global expansion in autonomous mobility, combining Baidu's cutting-edge driverless vehicle technology with Uber's extensive user base.

The new service allows riders to potentially be matched with an Apollo Go vehicle when requesting an UberX or Uber Comfort trip. Additionally, users can select a dedicated "Autonomous" option within the Uber app to increase their chances of securing a robotaxi. Initially available in select areas of Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah, the service plans to expand its operational territory based on learnings and regulatory approvals. Fleet operations are managed by third-party operator New Horizon Luxury Transport.

The Dubai launch marks the first tangible deployment of the multi-year strategic partnership between Uber and Baidu. This collaboration aims to integrate thousands of Apollo Go vehicles into Uber's global network. Nan Yang, Vice President of Baidu's Intelligent Driving Group, emphasized that Dubai is the first city where Apollo Go has established a dual model, offering both self-operated and partner-based autonomous ride-hailing services internationally.

This development is set to intensify competition within the autonomous vehicle sector and could have substantial implications for both Uber's and Baidu's business models. Uber continues its strategy of expanding market share through partnerships, thereby avoiding the significant research and development costs associated with developing its own autonomous driving technology.
