The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies is bringing Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and ASML Holding N.V. to the forefront as two of the most critical links in the global semiconductor supply chain. Both companies play indispensable roles in the production of AI chips, significantly benefiting from this immense infrastructure boom. TSMC holds a virtual monopoly in the manufacturing of advanced logic chips, while the Dutch company ASML boasts a full monopoly on the lithography machines essential for producing these chips.

ASML is renowned for its near-total monopoly in the production of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines. These machines are crucial for etching the intricate patterns onto silicon wafers required for the latest generation of AI chips, including Nvidia's Blackwell architecture. ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet highlighted that the semiconductor industry is entering an unprecedented 'major race,' with AI being utilized to enhance efficiency across every stage of the value chain. With over 90% market share in these critical machines, ASML is an indispensable partner for AI chip manufacturing.

Conversely, TSMC, the world's largest independent semiconductor foundry, holds a virtual monopoly in manufacturing advanced logic chips such as graphics processing units (GPUs) and high-performance central processing units (CPUs). The company stands out as the sole entity capable of producing advanced chips at scale with high yields. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has lauded TSMC as "one of the greatest companies in the history of humanity," affirming its pivotal role in the AI revolution. In the second quarter of 2026, TSMC reported revenue of $40.2 billion, a 36% increase year-over-year, and a record net profit up 77.4%. The company noted that its high-performance computing (HPC) segment accounted for 66% of its quarterly revenue, a 20% increase from the previous quarter.

The massive investments in AI infrastructure have led both companies to report strong financial results exceeding expectations and to raise their annual outlooks. ASML increased its annual targets for the second time due to strong order momentum, while TSMC announced an additional $100 billion investment in its Arizona operations. Despite these positive developments, recent declines in TSMC and ASML shares have been observed, possibly due to geopolitical uncertainties in Iran and some investor concerns regarding the sustainability of AI investment levels.

Taiwan's position in the global semiconductor market is strategically significant, contributing 60% of the world's foundry market and over 90% of advanced chip production. This creates a notable geopolitical risk factor for TSMC, a concern not shared by the Netherlands-based ASML. The semiconductor industry faces a bottleneck as AI-driven demand outpaces supply, with ASML's CEO noting the challenge of "building capacity at this scale, at this speed, has never been done before."

Analysts generally maintain a "Strong Buy" recommendation for TSMC, setting an average price target of $512.86 per share (as of July 2026), indicating significant upside potential driven by AI chip demand. TSMC's revenue growth is projected to be around 35% for 2026. For ASML, a "Moderate Buy" consensus exists, with an average price target of $1,970.33, suggesting approximately 12.7% upside from its current price. ASML is expected to achieve 38.17% earnings growth in the coming year. Some analysts favor TSMC due to its faster near-term growth profile driven by AI chip demand, despite the geopolitical risks involved.
