TikTok Shop Leads Product Discovery, Amazon Retains Sales Dominance
A TikTok Shop-sponsored survey reveals it's the leading channel for consumers to discover new products. However, e-commerce professionals indicate that consumers often opt to purchase these discovered items from other platforms, such as Amazon.

A notable dynamic is unfolding in the e-commerce landscape: while TikTok Shop emerges as a leading platform for new product discovery, Amazon's dominance in final purchase transactions remains unchallenged. A GlobalData study, commissioned by TikTok Shop, indicates that TikTok ranks highest among consumers' preferred methods for discovering new brands and products. However, industry experts point out that this discovery journey often culminates in purchases on established platforms like Amazon.
According to the survey findings, two out of three TikTok Shop users discovered a new brand on the platform in the past year. With 72% of these brands being small businesses earning under $15 million annually, TikTok proves to be a powerful showcase for novel and niche brands. TikTok's AI-powered discovery engine, the 'For You' feed, is estimated to drive 68% of purchases on the platform, with products found through recommendations converting at more than three times the rate of those found via search. This highlights the platform's success in leveraging its entertainment-centric nature to trigger impulse purchases. E-commerce entrepreneurs like Jared Mortensen note that TikTok's live streaming and creator-driven approach enable a raw and personal interaction that larger brands often cannot replicate, allowing small businesses to compete effectively.
TikTok Shop's growth in the U.S. has been remarkable, reaching $15.82 billion in sales volume in 2025, a massive 108% surge from the previous year. In the first half of 2026, its U.S. Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) soared to $32 billion, marking a 61% year-over-year increase. Data from customer intelligence firm Consumer Edge indicates that TikTok Shop's share of U.S. online retail spending climbed to approximately 2% by July 2026. The platform is taking steps to bolster its infrastructure by introducing Amazon Prime-style membership programs and managed services for sellers. Despite this, Amazon maintains a dominant share of around 35% to 40% of the U.S. e-commerce market, particularly in high-ticket items, electronics, and purchases requiring established trust.
This scenario gives rise to what is termed a 'two-funnel model' in the e-commerce sector. TikTok Shop is effective in the 'demand creation' funnel, where consumers are open to discovery and not yet aware of what they want, while Amazon excels in the 'demand capture' funnel, attracting consumers who are actively searching for a specific product with high purchase intent. Analysts suggest that the two platforms act more as complementary forces than direct rivals. A product going viral on TikTok can often direct consumers straight to Amazon to compare prices and read reviews. This 'search lift' effect underscores the importance for brands to strategically utilize both platforms.
The rise of social commerce is driving significant shifts in consumer behavior. Platforms like TikTok, which blend entertainment and shopping, are boosting impulse purchases, while traditional e-commerce platforms continue to be preferred for more planned and trust-based shopping. TikTok Shop's efforts to enhance its logistics infrastructure and offer faster delivery guarantees to sellers are increasing confidence in the platform, paving the way for consumers to even purchase higher-value items through TikTok.
Looking ahead, e-commerce experts anticipate that brands will increasingly adopt multi-channel strategies, leveraging both TikTok Shop's discovery power and Amazon's established logistics and reliability advantages. While Amazon is expected to maintain its leadership in volume, TikTok Shop is projected to lead in growth velocity. Considering the unique advantages and target audiences of both platforms, it will be crucial for sellers to adapt their products and marketing strategies to these distinct ecosystems rather than relying on a single platform. With growing consumer trust and diversifying platform services, the future of e-commerce is set to become more integrated and dynamic.
