Tether announced in its March 31, 2026 attestation that the company generated approximately $1.04 billion in net profit in the first quarter of 2026 and that its excess reserve buffer reached $8.23 billion, an all-time high. The attestation was prepared and confirmed by BDO, one of the world’s leading independent accounting firms.

According to the report, Tether’s total assets stood at US$191,767,741,495 while total liabilities were US$183,535,531,717, leaving a surplus of US$8,232,209,778. The company said its reserves are concentrated in short-duration, high-quality liquid instruments, with direct and indirect exposure to U.S. Treasury bills of roughly US$141 billion as of March 31, 2026. The attestation also lists physical gold holdings at about US$20 billion and Bitcoin holdings near US$7 billion.

Tether noted that despite a highly volatile market backdrop the quarter, USD₮ circulation remained broadly stable and actually increased by more than 5 billion USD₮ into April, supporting ongoing demand. CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized the company’s focus on building a simple, liquid and resilient structure that functions across market conditions, a message intended to reinforce counterparties’ confidence in USD₮.

From a market perspective, a sizable excess reserve buffer can act as a powerful confidence mechanism for counterparties and users during periods of redemption stress. Tether’s large exposure to short-dated sovereign instruments increases its interest income and liquidity flexibility, while limited allocations to gold and Bitcoin provide an additional, though more volatile, loss-absorbing layer. These dynamics matter for traders and institutions that use USDT as a primary settlement and liquidity instrument.

Analysts highlight that while the reserve buffer and treasury-heavy posture reduce short-term liquidity risk, the composition of reserves will determine resilience under extreme stress scenarios. Going forward, developments in U.S. Treasury yields, gold prices and Bitcoin volatility are likely to shape Tether’s reserve income and the trajectory of its excess buffer. Market participants will watch subsequent attestations and independent audit steps closely to assess ongoing stability.
