Tesla has taken a significant step toward expanding its presence in the British energy market after securing an electricity supply license from the UK’s energy regulator, the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem). The license allows Tesla Energy Ventures Limited, the company’s Manchester‑based subsidiary, to supply electricity to residential and commercial customers across England, Scotland and Wales, but not Northern Ireland.

The approval marks Tesla’s potential entry into the competitive UK retail energy market, where established suppliers such as British Gas, OVO and Octopus Energy currently dominate. With the license, Tesla will be permitted to sell electricity directly to end users rather than simply providing energy technology products.

Tesla’s energy division already offers solar panels, home battery systems such as Powerwall, and large-scale grid battery storage projects. The company also operates an electricity retail service called Tesla Electric in Texas, which integrates home energy usage, electric vehicle charging and renewable energy sources.

Industry observers say Tesla could attempt to replicate a similar integrated model in the UK by combining electricity supply with its battery storage and electric vehicle ecosystem. The move highlights Tesla’s broader strategy to expand beyond electric vehicles and build a vertically integrated energy business.
