Electric vehicle giant Tesla has officially launched the long-awaited six-seater, long-wheelbase Model Y L version in the United States and Puerto Rico markets. This strategic move aims to boost the company's sales and specifically address the demand for multi-passenger SUVs, filling a critical gap in its product portfolio. The Model Y L offers a more spacious interior and a significantly more comfortable third-row seating experience compared to the standard Model Y.

The new Model Y L is approximately 7 inches (180 mm) longer overall, with its wheelbase extended by 5.9 inches (150 mm) compared to the standard Model Y. This expansion allows for a 2+2+2 six-seat configuration, featuring independent captain's chairs in the second row with heating, ventilation, and one-touch fold functionality. The third-row seats also come with heating and power recline features. The initial "Launch Series" is priced starting at $61,990, which is notably higher than the analyst expectations of around $54,000 for the market.

The Model Y L "Launch Series" package boasts impressive performance specifications, including an EPA-estimated range of 325 miles and an acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. It also comes equipped with premium features such as 12 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), 12 months of free Supercharging, an enhanced 19-speaker audio system, larger touchscreens (16-inch front, 8-inch second-row), and 50W cooled wireless charging. These enhancements are designed to make the vehicle more appealing against its competitors in the market.

This launch addresses a significant void in Tesla's U.S. vehicle lineup. The company had previously discontinued larger, multi-passenger vehicles like the Model S and Model X. The seven-seat option in the standard Model Y had faced criticism for its cramped interior. The Model Y L provides a genuine solution for families and buyers requiring increased passenger capacity, responding to these criticisms. This model had already been introduced in international markets such as China, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and India.

Market analysts are closely watching how the Model Y L's higher starting price will impact its competitiveness against more affordably priced rivals like the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. The launch coincided with Tesla reporting strong second-quarter delivery figures, which surpassed Wall Street estimates. However, despite the robust delivery performance, the company's shares fell by approximately 7% on the launch day, reflecting investor concerns regarding pricing and broader market conditions. Cheaper versions are anticipated to be introduced in the future, which could broaden the appeal to a wider consumer base.
