Terafab Texas: Musk's chip factory could cost up to $119 billion

A public filing posted for Grimes County shows SpaceX’s proposed Terafab semiconductor complex would begin with an initial capital outlay of at least $55 billion, while the company estimates total investment could rise to $119 billion if subsequent phases are completed.

The notice describes a multi-phase, vertically integrated semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing facility to be located within a newly designated reinvestment zone; local officials are scheduled to consider property tax abatement and other incentives at a June meeting tied to the proposal.

Reports indicate the facility is intended to supply chips for Tesla’s autonomous systems and robotics, SpaceX’s satellite and potential space-based data centers, and xAI’s AI infrastructure. Coverage also suggests Intel has been involved in technical discussions or partnerships related to the project, and that the plan targets advanced process nodes and very large-scale compute capacity.

The $55 billion figure contrasts with Elon Musk’s initial March announcement that placed Terafab’s primary investment at roughly $20–25 billion, underscoring a significant upward revision in disclosed public filings. If carried through to full scale, the project would represent one of the largest proposed semiconductor investments in the United States and could reshape parts of the domestic supply chain.
