Tencent Exceeds Revenue Forecasts: Strong Games and AI-Driven Ad Sales Propel Growth

Tencent Holdings (0700.HK), a leading Chinese technology company, reported stronger-than-expected revenue growth for the second quarter of 2026. The company's robust advertising sales and steady gaming income were the primary drivers behind this expansion. Nevertheless, aggressive investments in artificial intelligence (AI) caused net profit to fall short of analyst estimates, fueling investor concerns regarding the magnitude of spending.

For the three months ended June, Tencent's revenue increased by 11% year-on-year to 204.8 billion yuan (approximately $30.36 billion). This figure surpassed analyst estimates of 202.2 billion yuan, according to LSEG data. Despite this revenue beat, net profit edged up only 0.7% year-on-year to 56 billion yuan, significantly missing market expectations of 61.8 billion yuan. Adjusted net profit, however, saw a 9% increase. Marketing services revenue notably surged by 22%, driven by AI-enhanced targeting and improved ad performance. Domestic games revenue also contributed significantly to the company's performance, rising by 17%.

A key factor suppressing the company's profit figures was the massive capital expenditure in the AI sector. Tencent's capital expenditures in the second quarter skyrocketed by 176% year-on-year to 52.8 billion yuan. The company plans to more than double its investments in AI development in 2026, targeting foundational models like Hunyuan and AI assistants such as Yuanbao. Tencent is rapidly progressing to integrate AI across its vast empire, from the Weixin messaging and payments ecosystem to cloud computing and gaming.

The market reacted with a mixed response to Tencent's financial results. The company's shares closed down 1.95% on the Hong Kong stock exchange on the day of the announcement, having already experienced a 26% decline year-to-date in 2026. Investors remain cautious about the scale of AI investments and their potential impact on short-term profitability. Furthermore, Tencent faces intense AI competition in China from rivals such as ByteDance, Alibaba, DeepSeek, and Moonshot AI.

Tencent views AI as a strategic lever to both strengthen its existing core businesses and create new product opportunities. The company reported significant progress with its Hunyuan 3 Preview model, which is now deployed across 131 internal products. Additionally, its AI-powered desktop assistant, WorkBuddy, has reportedly become the most widely used office agent in China. These developments underscore the company's rapid advancement in AI capabilities.

While analysts generally agree that Tencent's AI investments could serve as a long-term growth engine for the company, they also note that these expenditures will likely continue to pressure short-term profitability. Company management views these strategic AI investments as incubation periods that should be evaluated separately from ongoing operational performance, expecting monetization to follow usage over time. In the upcoming period, the market will closely monitor Tencent's AI integration and the market acceptance of its new AI products, as these will reflect the financial impact of these investments.
