Stratiphy Reopens Tax-Free Route to Crypto ETNs for UK Investors

London-based fintech Stratiphy has re-established a tax-efficient route for UK retail investors seeking exposure to cryptocurrency exchange-traded notes (ETNs). The company listed three 21Shares ETNs — covering Bitcoin, Ether and a Bitcoin–gold blend — inside an Innovative Finance ISA (IFISA) wrapper, addressing a practical gap created by recent HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) guidance on ISA eligibility.

According to announcements and regulatory registers, Stratiphy is listed among HMRC-approved ISA managers with an IFISA component, enabling it to offer these ETNs within a tax-advantaged account. HMRC’s guidance reclassified crypto ETNs such that, from 6 April 2026, new purchases should be made via IFISAs rather than Stocks & Shares ISAs, a shift that left many mainstream platforms unable to provide a compliant, tax-free route for new ETN investments.

Market participants say the move may reawaken demand for tax-sheltered crypto exposure. 21Shares products have accounted for a significant share of trading since retail ETNs returned to the London market, and being among the first platforms to combine ETN distribution with IFISA eligibility could attract new inflows to Stratiphy while broadening distribution for listed crypto ETPs.

The development follows the FCA’s decision in 2025 to reopen retail access to certain crypto ETNs, but HMRC’s subsequent ISA reclassification narrowed the practical routes for tax-free ownership. IFISAs historically serve niche peer‑to‑peer and crowdfunding investments, so the pairing of ETNs with IFISA accounts represents a regulatory and operational adaptation by issuers and platforms as the market matures.

Analysts caution that while the tax wrapper may increase retail participation, risks remain: price volatility, structural counterparty considerations and varying platform policies on transfers and existing holdings. Key near-term questions include whether larger incumbent platforms will enable IFISA access for ETNs and whether HMRC will revisit ISA classifications as market understanding evolves; these outcomes will shape investor options in the coming months.
