Steven Madden Surpasses Q2 Expectations, Raises Full-Year Guidance
Footwear and accessories giant Steven Madden announced strong financial results for the second quarter of 2026. The company surpassed revenue and earnings per share expectations, consequently raising its full-year guidance.
Steven Madden (SHOO), a leading designer and marketer of fashion-forward footwear, accessories, and apparel, announced its financial results for the second quarter of 2026, significantly exceeding market expectations. The company revitalized investor confidence with robust sales performance and increased profitability, leading to a positive impact on its stock. This successful quarter also prompted the company to revise its full-year revenue and earnings per share (EPS) guidance upwards.
Steven Madden's total revenue for the three months ended June 30, 2026, surged by 19.1% year-over-year to $665.9 million, surpassing analysts' estimates of $635.5 million. Adjusted diluted earnings per share reached $0.44, more than double the $0.20 EPS from the prior year and exceeding the consensus estimate of $0.33. The company reported a net income of $27.7 million for the quarter, a significant turnaround from a net loss of $39.5 million in the second quarter of 2025.
The gross profit margin also saw substantial improvement, rising from 40.4% to 46.5%. Direct-to-consumer revenue increased by 30.6% to $255.4 million, or 11.1% excluding Kurt Geiger. Wholesale revenue grew by 13.0% to $407.5 million, with an 11.5% increase excluding Kurt Geiger. Sales in the handbag category surged by approximately 30%, while U.S. full-price store sales and e-commerce sales increased by 16% and 20%, respectively.
Steven Madden's strong financial report highlighted the company's resilience and growth potential despite broader challenges in the retail sector. These results, achieved during a period of ongoing inflationary pressures and uncertainties in consumer spending, underscore the brand's robust customer base and product appeal. Following the news, SHOO shares reacted positively in the market, showing an increase. The integration of Kurt Geiger and strong U.S. demand were key drivers behind the margin expansion and the raised guidance.
While macroeconomic factors such as global supply chain disruptions and rising freight costs continue to exert pressure on the retail sector, Steven Madden's management team demonstrated its ability to effectively navigate these challenges. Factors such as increased average selling prices, reduced promotional activity, and a smaller negative impact from tariffs contributed to the improvement in the gross profit margin. However, management's expectation of less gross-margin expansion in the second half of the year, as it laps price increases and Kurt Geiger integration benefits, points to potential future challenges.
The company's management raised its fiscal year 2026 revenue growth forecast from 10%-12% to 11%-13%, and its diluted earnings per share (EPS) outlook from $2.00-$2.10 to $2.05-$2.15. This upward revision is supported by strong momentum in the Steven Madden brand, handbags, wholesale, and direct-to-consumer channels. Nevertheless, higher freight, supplier costs, and tariffs are expected to reduce earnings by an additional $0.06. Furthermore, private-label wholesale sales are projected to decline in the mid-to-high teens. Analysts and the market will closely monitor whether the company can sustain this strong momentum throughout the remainder of the year.
