UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has warned that the government is prepared to take action against companies suspected of profiteering during the ongoing fuel crisis. Speaking during a visit to Northern Ireland, Starmer said authorities would not hesitate to intervene if businesses exploit the situation by charging unfair prices for heating oil.

The prime minister emphasized that energy suppliers must ensure their pricing remains fair, transparent and justified. According to Starmer, any attempt to take advantage of households facing rising living costs would be unacceptable. He stressed that the government is closely monitoring the market and stands ready to act if consumers are being overcharged.

Energy costs are particularly sensitive in Northern Ireland, where the majority of households rely on heating oil rather than natural gas for home heating. Around 62.5% of homes in the region depend on heating oil, the highest share among all UK nations, leaving households especially exposed to global oil price shocks.

Industry data indicates that heating oil prices in Northern Ireland have surged sharply following geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the US military strike on Iran. The spike has intensified pressure on household budgets, prompting calls for government oversight and potential measures to ensure fair pricing in the fuel market.
