SSE Airtricity Increases Electricity Bills by 6.2% in Northern Ireland

SSE Airtricity, a major electricity supplier in Northern Ireland, has announced a significant price increase set to affect approximately 134,000 households in the region. The company stated that electricity bills will rise by 6.2% starting from August 1, 2026. This adjustment will result in an additional annual cost of around £71.57 to £76 for an average customer, equating to roughly 20 pence per day.

The company attributed the price hike primarily to sustained volatility in energy markets and escalating wholesale costs. Stephen Gallagher, Managing Director of SSE Airtricity, emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly and is a direct consequence of external wholesale market costs beyond their control. Gallagher affirmed the company's commitment to mitigating the impact of ongoing market volatility on its customers.

The Consumer Council, representing consumers in Northern Ireland, expressed disappointment regarding the news for households but acknowledged the pressures faced by energy suppliers due to recent movements in wholesale markets. The Council urged customers who are struggling to pay their bills to contact their supplier for advice and support.

Such increases in energy prices are typically driven by dynamics within global energy markets. Specifically, rising gas and carbon prices directly influence electricity generation costs, which are then passed on to end consumers.
