SpaceX, Elon Musk's aerospace and artificial intelligence company, has seen a notable rebound in its stock performance in recent days, following a turbulent period in the markets post-IPO. The company's market capitalization surged by over $327 billion in the past week, drawing renewed attention to its valuation and the ambitious promises made by its founder. This rally brings the shares closer to their initial public offering price, intensifying the scrutiny on Musk's ability to execute his high-flying vision for space and AI.

SpaceX made its historic debut on the Nasdaq exchange under the ticker "SPCX" on June 12, 2026, marking the largest initial public offering in history. Priced at $135 per share, the IPO raised approximately $75 billion, establishing the company's market value at around $1.77 trillion. The initial trading days saw strong investor demand, with shares closing up over 19% at $160.95 and pushing the market capitalization beyond $2 trillion. On June 16, the stock even reached an intraday high of $225.64, briefly elevating the company's valuation to nearly $3 trillion and making Elon Musk the world's first trillionaire for a short period.

However, this spectacular start was followed by a sharp downturn. In the weeks after the IPO, SpaceX's market capitalization shed over $1 trillion, and its shares fell below the $135 IPO price. By early August, the stock had plummeted to around $107, with the company's valuation shrinking to approximately $1.4 trillion. This decline was largely attributed to SpaceX's massive expenditures on artificial intelligence projects and its continued unprofitability. Analysts highlighted that the high capital expenditures and a valuation heavily reliant on future growth expectations fueled investor concerns.

Despite analyst warnings about potential selling pressure from the expiration of early investor lock-up periods, SpaceX shares staged a robust two-day rally last week. The stock surged 16% on Friday, bringing its two-day gain to approximately 23%. This movement added over $327 billion to the company's market value in just two days. The rally coincided with the release of the company's first quarterly earnings report as a public entity. While SpaceX reported revenue of $7.8 billion for the second quarter, exceeding analyst expectations, it also posted a net loss of $541 million. Significant investments in AI infrastructure and ongoing costs associated with the Starship program continued to weigh on profitability.

SpaceX's market performance underscores the challenge Elon Musk faces in balancing his ambitious vision for space colonization, Starlink satellite internet, and artificial intelligence with tangible financial results. The company's strategic moves, such as the acquisition of AI coding platform Anysphere for $60 billion and plans to establish orbital data centers, are viewed as future growth catalysts. However, the substantial costs and long-term nature of these projects introduce considerable uncertainty for investors. While Musk emphasizes the company's goals to deploy space-based data centers and enhance AI capabilities through Starlink, the financial burden of achieving these objectives remains significant.

Analysts suggest that the future trajectory of SpaceX shares will largely depend on the operational success of the Starship rocket system, the profitability of Starlink's subscriber growth, and the speed at which AI investments translate into revenue. Upcoming lock-up expirations could also introduce further market volatility. While some analysts maintain that the company's current valuation remains ambitious and requires a careful assessment of its risk-reward profile, others believe the recent rally might signal a potential bottom. Investors will continue to closely monitor SpaceX's ability to transform its monumental space and AI endeavors into sustainable profitability.
