SpaceX Appoints ‘PayPal Mafia’ Member Roelof Botha to Board

SpaceX, the aerospace technology company founded by Elon Musk, has brought a renowned figure from the finance and technology world, Roelof Botha, onto its board of directors. According to the company's announcement, Botha, a former Chief Financial Officer of PayPal and an experienced venture capitalist, will serve as an independent common stock director and will also join the Audit Committee. This appointment, effective June 16, 2026, is considered a significant step in SpaceX's objective to bolster its corporate structure in the post-IPO era.

Roelof Botha is well-known as a key member of the “PayPal Mafia,” an influential group of former PayPal employees who went on to found or invest in groundbreaking companies across the technology and finance sectors. Botha served as PayPal's CFO from 2000 to 2003, during which he oversaw the company's initial public offering in 2002. He later joined Sequoia Capital in 2003, becoming a managing partner from 2022 to 2025, and played a crucial role in early-stage investments in numerous successful ventures, including YouTube and Instagram.

Beyond founder Elon Musk, SpaceX's board also includes Luke Nosek, a co-founder of PayPal. Nosek was among SpaceX's earliest investors through Founders Fund and Gigafund and has served as a board member since 2008. Peter Thiel, another prominent “PayPal Mafia” member, has also been a significant backer of SpaceX through his Founders Fund.
