SoftBank's OpenAI Investment Reaches $65 Billion: AI-Focused Strategy Deepens
Japanese technology giant SoftBank has increased its total investment in AI leader OpenAI to approximately $65 billion, securing about a 13% stake in the company. This massive investment is seen as part of SoftBank's aggressive growth strategy in artificial intelligence, generating both excitement and financial risk concerns in the markets.
SoftBank Group, the Japan-based technology and investment conglomerate, has solidified its ambitious artificial intelligence strategy by increasing its total investment in leading AI company OpenAI to approximately $65 billion. With this massive capital commitment, SoftBank has acquired a significant ownership stake of about 13% in OpenAI. This development clearly demonstrates SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son's unwavering belief in the future of artificial intelligence and his desire to strengthen the company's leadership in this transformative field.
SoftBank's investments in OpenAI have been incremental since September 2024. The company initially committed to a $40 billion investment in OpenAI in March 2025, which was finalized in December 2025. Subsequently, in February 2026, a definitive agreement was reached to make an additional follow-on investment of $30 billion to participate in OpenAI's new fundraising round. This $30 billion supplementary investment is being deployed in three tranches of $10 billion each, in April, July, and October 2026. To finance an investment of this magnitude, SoftBank is known to have utilized various methods, including bridge loans and borrowings from other financial institutions. Additionally, the company is planning a 60 billion yen (approximately $369 million) bond issuance targeting institutional investors in Japan and has reportedly sold stakes in companies such as Nvidia (NVDA) and T-Mobile.
An investment of this scale has generated both excitement and some concerns in the markets. SoftBank's intense capital allocation to the AI sector has raised questions among investors regarding capital concentration and the company's rising debt levels. S&P Global Ratings downgraded SoftBank's outlook to "negative" in March 2026, warning that additional investments in OpenAI would further reduce the company's financial capacity. Despite OpenAI reaching a valuation of $852 billion in its latest funding round, SoftBank shares experienced a decline following reports that OpenAI's initial public offering (IPO) might be delayed.
SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son possesses a strong vision for artificial intelligence's potential to transform the global economy. Son has dismissed concerns about an "AI bubble" as "absurd," stating that those who ask such questions do not fully understand AI's potential. The company's investment is also linked to initiatives like the "Stargate Project," which aims to build a massive AI infrastructure in collaboration with the U.S. government. Through this strategy, SoftBank aims to accelerate AI research and ecosystem expansion, advancing its "artificial superintelligence strategy".
However, this aggressive strategy also brings challenges. Questions persist regarding OpenAI's ability to generate revenue and cover its substantial data center expenditures. The company has recently missed some internal revenue and user targets while facing competition from rivals like Google and Anthropic. Analysts and market observers continue to closely monitor the long-term returns of SoftBank's significant bet and its impact on the company's financial structure. Future developments in OpenAI's IPO process and revenue performance will be critically important for the success of SoftBank's AI-focused strategy.
