SK Hynix Posts Record Q2 Profit, Misses Estimates Despite Revenue Surge

South Korean memory chipmaker SK Hynix (000660.KS) reported record revenue and operating profit for the second quarter of 2024, propelled by strong demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) chips for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. The company announced that its revenue for the April-June period surged by 256.8% year-over-year to 79.3187 trillion Korean won (approximately $57.5 billion). Operating profit saw an impressive 557.2% year-over-year increase, reaching 60.5426 trillion won (approximately $43.9 billion), marking its highest quarterly performance ever. However, despite this robust performance, both revenue and operating profit fell short of market expectations, which had projected around 82.58 trillion won and 63.15 trillion won respectively.

According to the company's disclosure, net profit soared by 1,242.5% compared to the previous year, reaching 93.9226 trillion won. This significant increase was largely boosted by a non-operating gain of 62.166 trillion won from the partial sale of Kioxia shares. SK Hynix attributed its record profitability to expanded sales of high-value products such as HBM and other high-performance products for AI servers. Additionally, contract prices for both Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) and NAND flash memory experienced significant quarter-over-quarter increases. Specifically, contract prices for certain DRAM chips jumped by about 52% in the second quarter from the previous quarter, while prices for some NAND products doubled.

One of the primary reasons for missing market estimates was SK Hynix's higher proportion of HBM sales, which, while strategic, might have limited the profit growth effect compared to the stronger price rally in conventional, general-purpose memory chips from which rivals benefited more. Elevated investor expectations also contributed to this 'earnings miss'. Following the earnings announcement, SK Hynix shares dropped by 9% on Wall Street during regular trading and continued to decline in after-hours trading. The South Korean Kospi index also saw a decline, impacted by the news.

This financial development underscores the ongoing robust demand for AI in the global semiconductor industry, yet also highlights how market expectations can sometimes outpace actual performance. The expansion of AI infrastructure investments continues to drive demand for high-performance server products, pushing memory chip prices higher. However, concerns regarding the ability of 'hyperscalers' such as Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Oracle to fund their planned hundreds of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure investments have recently weighed on chip shares globally.

Analysts and market observers note that SK Hynix maintains a leading position in the HBM market, and its AI-focused product portfolio is crucial for the company's future growth. The company announced that mass shipments of HBM4 chips have already begun and are expected to further ramp up in the second half of the year. It also aims to scale its 321-layer product capacity to approximately 50% of domestic production by year-end and accelerate the transition to advanced NAND process nodes. SK Hynix believes that AI demand could stabilize memory chip cycles, potentially ending the industry's notorious boom-bust patterns. The company also reported strengthening its medium to long-term business foundation by securing long-term agreements with over 10 key customers.
