Silver Rebounds on AI Demand: Is It Time to Invest?
Silver prices have rebounded significantly, fueled by robust demand from AI data centers. Increasing industrial use and persistent supply deficits strengthen the precious metal's outlook.

Silver prices have recently shown a notable upward trend, capturing investor attention. After falling from a peak of over $115 per ounce in January to around $56, spot silver has made a significant recovery, climbing above $64 in recent weeks. This rebound is primarily driven by strong demand from artificial intelligence (AI)-powered data centers and increasing industrial consumption.
The rapid proliferation of AI technologies and the massive investments in data center infrastructure are playing a critical role in this precious metal's recovery. Tech giants such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta have announced over $200 billion in data center spending through 2025. McKinsey estimates that global data center spending could reach a staggering $7 trillion by 2030. Each large-scale data center requires thousands of servers, and each server incorporates silver in multiple components due to its superior electrical and thermal conductivity.
The silver market has been characterized by persistent supply deficits for four to six consecutive years. Sluggish growth in mine supply, largely a byproduct of copper, zinc, and lead mining, means that silver production cannot quickly respond to rising prices. According to The Silver Institute, more than half of annual silver demand now originates from industrial applications. Electronics and electrical uses represent the fastest-growing segment of this industrial demand, with solar panels (photovoltaics) and electric vehicles also being significant drivers.
Beyond industrial demand, silver prices are also influenced by geopolitical and macroeconomic factors. Inflation rates, interest rates, central bank monetary policies (particularly those of the U.S. Federal Reserve), and safe-haven demand are other crucial elements shaping silver's market performance. Expectations of U.S. interest rate cuts and global geopolitical tensions have been cited as factors supporting silver price rallies in the past.
Analysts anticipate that strong industrial demand from AI and green technologies will continue to support silver in the upcoming period. The Silver Institute projects a sixth consecutive structural deficit for the silver market in 2026. While factors like 'thrifting' (optimization of silver use) in the solar energy sector might slightly mitigate demand in some areas, the overarching trends of AI and electrification are expected to maintain robust overall industrial silver demand. Investors often view silver as a tool for portfolio diversification and a hedge against inflation.
