Rivian’s $57,990 R2 SUV Arrives Amid EV Market Slowdown
Rivian’s new R2 electric SUV is expected to start around $57,990 and deliver up to 330 miles of range. The model is seen as critical for the company as EV demand cools.
Rivian Automotive’s upcoming R2 SUV is emerging as a pivotal product for the electric vehicle startup, with a launch version expected to start around $57,990 and offer up to 330 miles (531 km) of range on a single charge. Positioned as a mid‑size, five‑seat electric SUV, the R2 is designed to help Rivian expand beyond the premium segment dominated by its R1S SUV and R1T pickup.
The Performance all‑wheel‑drive Launch Edition is reported to feature an 87.9 kWh battery pack capable of delivering roughly 330 miles of driving range. The model also includes advanced driver‑assistance capabilities through Rivian’s autonomy package and a towing capacity of about 4,400 pounds, positioning it competitively within the growing electric SUV segment.
The launch comes at a challenging time for the EV industry as higher interest rates, policy uncertainty and slowing consumer demand weigh on sales. For Rivian, the R2 represents a crucial step toward reaching a broader market and scaling production with a more affordable platform.
Industry analysts view the R2 as a potential catalyst for Rivian’s future growth. By targeting a price segment closer to mainstream EV buyers, the company aims to compete more directly with models such as Tesla’s Model Y and Ford’s Mustang Mach‑E while improving long‑term revenue and production volumes.
