Qantas A350 Completes Record-Breaking 24-Hour Test Flight

Qantas, the Australian airline, has set a new record in commercial aviation with its first Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, completing a non-stop test flight from Melbourne to Toulouse, France, in 24 hours and 24 minutes. This historic flight marks a critical phase in the airline's ambition to directly connect Australia's east coast with major global cities like London and New York. The journey garnered significant public interest, with over 120,000 people tracking the flight live on Flightradar24.

The specially adapted A350-1000ULR, developed by Airbus for Qantas, is designed for ultra-long-range operations, featuring an additional 20,000-liter fuel tank compared to the standard A350-1000 model. This modification enabled the aircraft to cover a distance of 23,075 kilometers (12,460 nautical miles) without stopping. The aircraft departed Melbourne on the evening of July 27 and landed in Toulouse on the morning of July 28, following an eastward route over the Pacific Ocean, the United States, Canada, and the Atlantic. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 22 hours and 42 minutes set by a Boeing 777-200LR from Hong Kong to London in 2005.

Under its "Project Sunrise" initiative, Qantas has ordered a total of 12 A350-1000ULR aircraft. These jets aim to transform the traditional "Kangaroo Route" from Australia to Europe, which can involve multiple stops and take up to five days, into a single, non-stop journey. This is expected to reduce travel times by up to four hours. The first aircraft is anticipated for delivery in April 2027, with daily direct flights between Sydney and London scheduled to commence in October 2027. Ticket sales are set to begin in February 2027.

This record-breaking flight signals a significant development in the global aviation industry, particularly in the expansion of the ultra-long-haul travel market and airline competitive strategies. Qantas's project could enhance its appeal, especially to business and premium segment customers, by offering faster, more convenient travel options with fewer layovers. Furthermore, with a capacity of 238 seats, significantly fewer than the 350-480 seats of a standard A350-1000, these aircraft prioritize enhanced comfort and feature a dedicated "Wellbeing Zone" to improve the long-haul flight experience.

Analysts suggest that this strategic move by Qantas could boost the company's revenues and market share in the long run. While non-stop flights offer time savings and comfort for passengers, they also present potential operational efficiencies for airlines.
