The rapid growth of the subscription platform OnlyFans is being supported by a largely unseen workforce, according to a BBC report. A woman based in the Philippines told the broadcaster that she earns less than $2 per hour while pretending to be a high‑earning OnlyFans model in conversations with subscribers. She described the experience as both "heartbreaking" and uncomfortable.

OnlyFans allows creators to monetize content through subscriptions, tips, and pay‑per‑view messages. However, the BBC report indicates that many popular creators rely on third‑party agencies that hire workers—often called “chatters”—to manage conversations with fans and encourage additional purchases of photos or videos.

The worker interviewed said she took the role during a period of financial difficulty to help support her family. She works eight‑hour shifts five days a week, using pre‑written scripts and sales strategies provided by agencies to maintain conversations and drive content sales while posing as the model herself.

Analysts say the practice highlights a broader trend of hidden digital labor within the platform economy. Countries such as the Philippines—known for a large English‑speaking remote workforce—have become key recruitment hubs for agencies managing OnlyFans accounts and online fan engagement.
