Oil prices climbed in early trading as markets priced in the lingering risk that a prolonged U.S.-Iran conflict could disrupt shipments and tighten global supplies. Traders rotated into crude on a perceived increase in geopolitical risk premium.

The move was reflected across Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) contracts, which registered multi-dollar intraday gains in some sessions; industry reports of U.S. inventory draws and continued disruptions to Gulf shipping routes provided additional upward pressure on quotations. Shipping and insurance frictions around the Strait of Hormuz were cited by market participants as a key catalyst.

That repricing has translated into a tangible risk premium in oil markets: front-month spreads widened at times and implied volatility rose, signalling that traders expect more frequent price swings while geopolitical uncertainty persists. Refining margins and diesel forwards also tightened, reflecting immediate strains in refined product availability.

In a broader macroeconomic context, sustained supply disruptions via the Hormuz route would raise transportation and commodity costs worldwide, adding upside risk to inflation and complicating central banks’ policy trade-offs between price stability and growth. Governments and international agencies have discussed contingency measures, including emergency stock releases and naval escorts, to limit shock transmission.

Analysts say the near-term outlook depends heavily on diplomatic and military developments: a rapid de-escalation would likely erase much of the current risk premium, while continued hostilities or attacks on infrastructure could push prices substantially higher and prompt further revisions to bank and agency forecasts. Market participants are therefore prioritising hedging and short-term liquidity management.
