Novo Nordisk's Oral Wegovy Pill Launches in UK Market: Company Shares Rise

Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company, has launched its groundbreaking oral Wegovy (semaglutide) pill for obesity treatment in private pharmacies across the UK, following approval by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The UK is the first country in Europe and the third globally, after the United States and the United Arab Emirates, to authorize the oral version of Wegovy. This development is critically important for the company to strengthen its position in the global obesity drug market and gain a competitive edge.

The oral version of Wegovy, which contains the same active ingredient, semaglutide, as the previously available injectable form in the UK, has been approved for adults with obesity (Body Mass Index of 30 or above) or those who are overweight (BMI of 27-30) and have at least one weight-related health condition. Clinical trials demonstrated that patients on the highest dose lost 14-17% of their body weight over 64 weeks. The drug will not be covered by the National Health Service (NHS) until reviewed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and will initially only be available via private prescription. This indicates that the medication will primarily reach consumers within the private healthcare sector at first.

The introduction of oral Wegovy signals Novo Nordisk's adoption of a "volume over price" strategy in the market. The company aims to make the pill more affordable than its injectable counterpart, thereby reaching millions of patients who previously could not afford or preferred not to use injectable treatments. This approach has the potential to significantly expand the overall obesity drug market. For instance, online pharmacies in the UK reported a waitlist of over 10,000 people for oral Wegovy even before its approval, with a large proportion being new to weight-loss therapies. MedPal AI, a digital health company, announced it raised £5 million to invest in stock and patient acquisition for the UK launch of oral Wegovy.

This development has had a positive impact on Novo Nordisk's shares (NVO). The company's first-quarter 2026 sales of oral Wegovy in the US nearly doubled analyst expectations, leading Novo Nordisk to revise its full-year earnings outlook upwards. Investment banks like Berenberg have also raised their price targets for Novo Nordisk shares, reinforcing confidence in the company's leadership in the obesity market. With the global GLP-1 drug market projected to reach $100 billion by the end of the decade, the launch of the oral form could provide Novo Nordisk with a significant advantage against competitors such as Eli Lilly.

Obesity remains a substantial public health concern in the UK, with approximately 2.5 million people already using weight-loss injections. Increased accessibility to oral Wegovy could diversify treatment options in this area, reaching a broader patient population. However, its inclusion in NHS coverage will depend on NICE's cost-effectiveness assessment, bringing potential impacts on public health budgets to the forefront. In the US, the Medicare program has also begun covering GLP-1 injections, supporting the global trend towards increasing access to obesity treatments.
