Naver's Q2 Profit Resilient Despite Higher AI Investment Costs
South Korean internet giant Naver reported record second-quarter revenue despite increased investments in AI infrastructure. Robust growth in its core search platform and e-commerce businesses helped offset a slight dip in operating profit.
Naver Corp. (035420.KS), South Korea's leading internet and technology company, announced record revenue for the second quarter of 2026, even as it experienced a slight decline in operating profit due to substantial investments in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. The company's consolidated revenue for the April-June period surged by 16.2% year-over-year, reaching ₩3.39 trillion (approximately $2.4 billion). Despite this strong top-line growth, operating profit decreased by 0.2% to ₩520.3 billion (approximately $365.6 million). However, net profit saw a significant increase of 41.6% to ₩704.3 billion (approximately $494.9 million), surpassing market expectations.
The dip in Naver's operating profit was primarily attributed to a 19.8% year-over-year increase in operating expenses, driven by preemptive investments in AI infrastructure. The company highlighted strong performance in its AI-integrated core businesses, such as advertising and e-commerce. AI-powered advertising, in particular, accounted for over 60% of the growth in advertising revenue. The newly launched "AI Briefing Ads" reportedly demonstrated click conversion rates more than 30% higher and purchase conversion rates over three times higher than traditional search ads. Furthermore, rapid expansion in the global consumer-to-consumer (C2C) segment also significantly contributed to revenue growth.
These financial results had an immediate impact on Naver's stock performance in the South Korean market. Following the announcement that its operating profit fell short of market forecasts, Naver's shares (035420.KS) opened more than 4% lower on the Seoul Stock Exchange. Investors appeared to be disappointed by the short-term pressure on profitability caused by the increased AI investment costs. Nevertheless, the robust increase in net profit and record revenue levels maintained optimism regarding the company's long-term growth potential. With a market capitalization of approximately ₩34.26 trillion, Naver's results underscore both the opportunities and costs associated with the AI transformation in the technology sector.
Naver's extensive AI investments should be viewed within the broader context of intense global competition among technology companies. The company is pursuing its goal of building gigawatt-scale AI cloud infrastructure through multi-billion-dollar partnerships with AI chip giant Nvidia and US private equity firm Brookfield. Nvidia's plan to acquire a 4.5% stake in Naver further highlights this strategic collaboration. These moves demonstrate Naver's efforts to enhance its competitive edge in the AI space and secure preferential access to Nvidia's latest architectures for its data centers.
Analysts and market observers emphasize that Naver's AI investments are crucial for the company's future growth. CEO Choi Soo-yeon stated that revenue from the "AI Factory" project, jointly established with Nvidia, is expected to materialize starting in the first half of 2027. Through these initiatives, Naver aims to create a new growth engine in the AI computing market and expand its customer base globally. Despite short-term profit pressures, there is a general expectation that AI integration will enhance efficiency and drive revenue across all of the company's business segments in the long run.
