Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, significantly alleviated ongoing oversupply concerns in the semiconductor market during the company's inaugural quarterly earnings call as a publicly traded entity. Musk's observation pinpointed memory chips as the primary bottleneck in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, coming at a time of intense debate regarding the sustainability of AI capital expenditures and the potential threat of oversupply for chip stocks.

Responding to a question, Musk stated that while memory chip output is increasing by approximately 20% annually, AI-driven demand is surging at a rate of 200% per year, “maybe higher.” This stark disparity, he noted, suggests that prices should increase rather than decrease, based on basic economic principles. SpaceX's capital expenditures for AI infrastructure reached $18.4 billion in the quarter, with roughly $15.8 billion allocated to AI-related projects. The company asserted it is building AI compute capacity faster than anyone else and expects to achieve over two gigawatts of compute by the end of the year.

Musk's remarks provided a significant boost to semiconductor stocks, which had experienced a challenging July with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) and South Korea's chip-heavy Kospi index (KR:180721) both declining by about a fifth. Following his comments, shares of South Korean memory chip manufacturers like SK Hynix (KR:000660) and Samsung Electronics (KR:005930) jumped 5.77% and 2.5%, respectively. Other leading sector stocks, including Micron (MU), Kioxia Holdings (JP:285A), and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM), also saw gains.

This development unfolds amidst broader market discussions concerning the longevity of the AI capex boom and the sustainability of the semiconductor “supercycle.” As one of the largest incremental buyers of compute through both SpaceX and Tesla (TSLA), Elon Musk offers a unique vantage point on memory demand. His companies' data centers consume vast volumes of memory chips, contributing to the pressures across the global chip supply chain.

Analysts and market observers suggest that Musk's comments reinforce a long-term bullish case for memory manufacturers. The rising prices of memory have already prompted gadget makers like Apple and Nintendo to hike prices for some of their products. Furthermore, Musk is pursuing plans to manufacture his own chips through Terafab, a joint venture between Tesla and SpaceX, to secure future chip supplies. This indicates that demand for AI technologies is expected to remain robust, and the strategic importance of the memory chip market will continue to grow in the foreseeable future.
