Missouri Trio Charged in Alleged Bitcoin Kidnapping Plot

Federal prosecutors in Connecticut have charged three Missouri residents—Sedric Louis, John Davis, and Martel Williams—with conspiracy to interfere with commerce by robbery (commonly known as Hobbs Act robbery) for their alleged involvement in a plot to kidnap a Bitcoin holder and force a cryptocurrency transfer. This incident stems from a planned but aborted robbery attempt in Connecticut in August 2024, once again highlighting the escalating physical security risks associated with crypto assets.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the defendants, Sedric Louis, John Davis, and Martel Williams, allegedly traveled from St. Louis, Missouri, to Connecticut between August 21 and August 24, 2024. During this period, they reportedly obtained rental vehicles, air rifles, and walkie-talkies. They then surveilled the intended target and his parents for two consecutive days. Their plan was to forcibly enter the family's home, threaten the target, and compel a transfer of hundreds of millions of dollars in Bitcoin to accounts controlled by the organizers. However, prosecutors allege that the Missouri group abandoned the attempt, fearing they had been recorded by home security cameras and losing confidence in the plan due to a lack of communication with their co-conspirators.

Shortly after the Missouri crew abandoned their plan, a separate group from Florida allegedly took over the operation on August 25, 2024. This second group carried out a violent carjacking, beating, and kidnapping of the target's parents in Danbury, Connecticut. Investigations revealed that the kidnapping victims were the parents of an individual who had participated in the theft of hundreds of millions of dollars in Bitcoin. This stolen cryptocurrency, approximately 4,100 BTC, was valued at around $245 million at the time and was reportedly acquired through a sophisticated social-engineering scam.

This case underscores the growing trend of criminal activity within the cryptocurrency markets and the physical security risks faced by investors. Data from blockchain security company CertiK indicates a significant increase in crypto-related home invasion cases, rising from just one reported incident in the first half of 2025 to 20 in the first half of 2026. Such incidents demonstrate that individuals holding high-value digital assets are vulnerable not only to cyberattacks but also to threats of physical violence.

In a broader economic and legal context, these events highlight new forms of crime and security challenges that accompany the integration of cryptocurrencies into the global financial system. Federal authorities are dedicating more resources to dismantle such complex and often international criminal networks. In the ongoing case, some coordinators and six other individuals from the Florida group, including Adam Iza and Saif Faiq, have pleaded guilty, while the Missouri trio has pleaded not guilty and faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Market analysts and security experts advise cryptocurrency holders to implement multi-layered security measures and enhance both their online and physical security to protect their assets. The rise in such cases suggests that law enforcement agencies need to evolve their strategies for combating crypto-related crime, and investors must become more aware of the risks in this space. Moving forward, the security of crypto assets will remain a significant focus at both individual and institutional levels.
