Mastercard Acquires Stablecoin Infrastructure Firm BVNK for $1.8 Billion
Mastercard has completed its acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK for up to $1.8 billion, marking a significant step in the company's strategy to integrate traditional and digital finance. Early investor Concentric shared insights into BVNK's journey, highlighting the importance of this strategic merger.

Global payments giant Mastercard (NYSE: MA) has announced the completion of its acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure provider BVNK in a deal valued at up to $1.8 billion. This strategic acquisition reinforces Mastercard's commitment to strengthening its presence in the digital assets space and bridging the gap between traditional financial systems and blockchain-based payments. The agreement aims to enhance Mastercard's payment processing capabilities, particularly for international transactions, through stablecoins.
Founded in London in 2021, BVNK specializes in technology that connects traditional currencies with digital currencies. The company's platform supports blockchain networks in over 130 countries, enabling businesses to process payments, receive funds, and convert between stablecoins and fiat currencies. BVNK offers enterprise-grade solutions in areas such as cross-border payments, remittances, settlement, and treasury flows. Mastercard initially announced the acquisition agreement in March 2026, with the finalization occurring on August 3, 2026.
The role of venture capital firm Concentric in this journey is noteworthy. As an early investor in BVNK, Concentric backed the company's founders, Jesse Hemson-Struthers, Donald Jackson, and Chris Harmse, in 2018 (or 2019 according to some sources) at a valuation of approximately €4 million. Kjartan Rist, co-founder of Concentric, stated that when they first invested, stablecoins were far from the financial mainstream, but they saw a significant opportunity to rebuild global payment infrastructure. Concentric participated in all of BVNK's funding rounds and retained its entire shareholding until the acquisition, demonstrating a long-term investment strategy.
Mastercard's move underscores the growing importance of digital assets and the transformation within the financial services industry. Jorn Lambert, Chief Product Officer at Mastercard, noted that stablecoins are increasingly addressing real-world needs in cross-border B2B payments, remittances, and treasury flows. By combining BVNK's on-chain infrastructure with its global network, Mastercard aims to deliver a more efficient, trusted, and seamless payment experience. Furthermore, Mastercard and BVNK are reportedly working on Open USD, a stablecoin project backed by banks and payment companies, expected to launch later this year.
This acquisition signifies a shift in the role of stablecoins within financial markets, moving from an experimental phase to an operational infrastructure. Rival Visa's development of stablecoin settlement systems further highlights the competition among major payment networks and the growing interest in digital assets. BVNK's possession of an EU e-money institution license and MiCA authorization in February 2026 provides Mastercard with a solid regulatory foundation in Europe.
Market analysts anticipate that Mastercard's acquisition of BVNK will position the company as a leader in the future of the global payment ecosystem. This integration is expected to enhance the potential for financial institutions, fintechs, and large enterprises to scale cross-border transactions and treasury management using stablecoins and tokenized assets. As Concentric co-founder Kjartan Rist remarked, this acquisition demonstrates what can be achieved when exceptional founders are supported with long-term conviction and active company building.
