Manchester United reported that the dismissal of former head coach Ruben Amorim generated an exceptional charge of £16.7 million and a related non‑cash write‑off of £5.2 million in its third‑quarter financial results, bringing the combined hit to roughly £21.9 million.

The club’s Q3 statement shows the £16.7m figure recorded as exceptional items and the £5.2m recognised as a loss on disposal of intangible assets linked to contracts and capitalised costs. Over the nine months to 31 March 2026 Manchester United reported an operating profit of £37.7m while its loss before income tax narrowed to £18.04m, reflecting both brighter on‑pitch results and significant cost‑reduction measures.

Improved Premier League performance under Michael Carrick and a higher share of televised fixtures lifted broadcasting revenues sharply — the Guardian reports a 57% rise in broadcast income in the third quarter to nearly £65m — while off‑pitch restructuring overseen by co‑owner Jim Ratcliffe contributed to lower operating costs. The club has also increased full‑year revenue guidance to between £655m and £665m.

Market reaction to the results was positive, with investors responding to the better‑than‑expected operational numbers and the upgraded outlook; several trading outlets noted a notable uptick in the stock following the release. Despite the operational improvement, higher net finance costs — including FX losses on unhedged US dollar borrowings — and the existing debt profile remain material risks for the consolidated income statement.

Analysts point out that the Amorim‑related charge is essentially a one‑off accounting and settlement cost and should not obscure the underlying operational recovery. Going forward, attention will focus on whether Champions League qualification, sponsorship deals and continued cost discipline can sustain revenue upgrades and offset financing headwinds in fiscal 2026/27.
