Lockheed Martin Raises Full-Year Outlook on Continued Munitions Production Expansion
Defense giant Lockheed Martin revised its full-year financial outlook upwards after its second-quarter profit surged as the company continues to rapidly expand munitions production. The firm highlighted strong order intake and a record backlog.

Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT), a leading player in the defense and aerospace sector, announced robust financial results for the second quarter of 2026, leading to an upward revision of its full-year outlook. The company reported a significant increase in profitability, driven by the ongoing expansion of its munitions production and heightened customer demand. This development once again underscores the positive impact of rising global defense expenditures on defense contractors.
For the second quarter of 2026, Lockheed Martin's sales increased by 11% year-over-year, reaching $20.1 billion. Net earnings surged to $1.8 billion, or $7.94 per share, compared to $342 million, or $1.46 per share, in the same period last year. The absence of significant program losses and other charges that impacted Q2 2025 contributed to this notable recovery in net profit. Furthermore, the company secured $65 billion in new orders during the quarter, bringing its backlog to a record $230 billion.
Jim Taiclet, Chairman, President, and CEO of Lockheed Martin, stated that this performance reflects not only increased customer demand but also the effectiveness of their "21st Century Security®" strategy, which focuses on integration, partnerships, and operational excellence. Lockheed Martin took a significant step in transforming munitions production by signing a $35 billion multi-year contract with the Missile Defense Agency for the production of THAAD interceptors. Additionally, the company has invested over $9 billion in its production facilities across the U.S., enhancing capabilities in Pennsylvania, Florida, and Arkansas, including doubling the size of its Archbald facility and creating over 700 new jobs.
The strong quarterly results and elevated guidance from Lockheed Martin were met with a positive market response. The company's shares climbed by up to 7% in premarket trading following the announcement. Analysts favorably viewed the company's outperformance on revenue and earnings per share estimates. Notably, revenue in the missiles and fire control segment rose by approximately 20%, fueled by increased production of PAC-3, Precision Strike, and THAAD systems.
This robust financial performance is underpinned by escalating global geopolitical tensions and the United States' efforts, along with its allies, to replenish weapon stockpiles. Ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have significantly boosted demand for advanced missile defense systems and precision-guided weapon systems. The Pentagon's push to rebuild inventories has led to a considerable increase in sales, profit expectations, and backlogs for defense contractors like Lockheed Martin.
Looking ahead, Lockheed Martin's management has raised its 2026 full-year sales forecast to a range of $79.75 billion to $81.75 billion, and its earnings per share guidance to $29.95 to $30.65. The company also anticipates a 28% higher segment operating profit and expects free cash flow to exceed $7 billion. Analysts project that Lockheed Martin will maintain its strong performance in the coming period, given persistent global defense requirements and the company's strategic initiatives to boost production capacities.
