Lido Upgrade Aims to Slash Ethereum's Validator Count by One-Third
Lido has launched its Curated Module v2 upgrade, migrating over 8 million staked ETH to Ethereum's new validator architecture. This move is designed to reduce the network's validator count by approximately one-third, easing the load on the consensus layer. The upgrade also introduces collateral requirements for professional node operators for the first time.
Lido, a leading liquid staking protocol, has initiated its Curated Module v2 (CMv2) upgrade, a significant step aimed at enhancing the efficiency and security of the Ethereum network. This major protocol change involves migrating over 8 million staked Ether (ETH), valued at approximately $16.5 billion, to Ethereum's new '0x02' validator architecture, which was introduced following the Pectra upgrade.
This upgrade represents Lido's most substantial protocol overhaul since its V2 launch in May 2023. Previously, each validator was capped at holding 32 ETH. With the Pectra upgrade, 0x02 format validators can now secure up to 2,048 ETH. This increased capacity allows Lido's professional node operators to manage the same amount of staked ETH with a significantly smaller number of individual validators.
Lido anticipates that this consolidation will reduce Ethereum's total validator count by approximately one-third, from about 880,000 to 628,000. Furthermore, this integration is expected to decrease attestation messages across the network by roughly 29% per epoch, substantially easing the load on the consensus layer. While this improves overall network performance, it will not directly affect gas fees or transaction speeds for end-users.
A pivotal new feature introduced with Curated Module v2 is the requirement for professional node operators to post ETH bonds as collateral, a first in the protocol's five-year history. This mechanism adds an economic accountability layer to a system that previously relied primarily on reputation. Operators will be required to deposit ETH as collateral to back their performance, with potential partial forfeiture in cases of validator slashing or operational failures. All 34 existing curated operators are expected to transition to this new system.
This development aligns with a broader trend within the Ethereum ecosystem towards a leaner, faster, and more cost-efficient validator structure. As Ethereum researchers continue their efforts to make the base layer more efficient, Lido's initiative demonstrates the adaptation and maturation of liquid staking protocols within the decentralized finance (DeFi) landscape.
Analysts and market expectations suggest that this consolidation could positively contribute to the long-term stability and security of the Ethereum network. However, the transition process is expected to take several months, with the legacy module slated to cease receiving new stake in December 2026 and be fully wound down around Q1 2027. During this migration period, a modest reduction of approximately 0.28% in annual staking rewards is anticipated.
