KOSPI Plunges 10% as Bitcoin Slides 2%; Global Markets on Edge

South Korea's benchmark KOSPI index experienced a significant shock on Tuesday, plummeting over 10% due to intense selling pressure on artificial intelligence (AI)-related chipmaker stocks. This sharp downturn led to a temporary halt in trading, adversely affecting broader Asian markets and causing Bitcoin to decline by approximately 2% after the U.S. market close, leaving investors in a state of heightened uncertainty.

The KOSPI index fell by 10.5% by midday, reaching 6,051.19 points, its lowest level since April. This steep drop was primarily driven by major index components, with Samsung Electronics shares tumbling 12% and SK Hynix shares falling 12.7%. The main reasons cited for the sell-off include growing concerns over the sustainability of the AI boom and increasing competition from Chinese AI startups and chipmakers. Notably, the 466% surge in Chinese chipmaker CXMT's initial public offering (IPO) on Shanghai's STAR exchange underscored these competitive pressures on global firms.

This development triggered a widespread "risk-off" sentiment across global markets. Other Asian markets also saw significant declines, with Tokyo's Nikkei 225 falling 4% and Taiwan's Taiex index slipping 3.9%. Bitcoin (BTC), in turn, dropped below the $63,000 mark with a decline of around 2% after U.S. trading hours. Analysts warn that such market shocks could push Bitcoin below key support levels if U.S. equities are also dragged down by their Asian counterparts.

The high volatility observed in the South Korean market this year has seen the KOSPI's volatility exceed 60% in 2026, surpassing even Bitcoin's price swings. This extreme fluctuation is attributed to the index's heavy concentration in a few major chip stocks like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, as well as the rising popularity of leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Regulators had previously issued warnings about excessive borrowing for investment and halted approvals for new single-stock leveraged ETFs due to high retail engagement and resultant market volatility.

Despite some positive developments regarding de-escalation of tensions between the U.S. and Iran, global markets continue to grapple with broader economic uncertainties. Upcoming Federal Reserve meetings (July 28-29) and the release of earnings reports from major technology companies are also keenly watched by investors. Analysts suggest that a crack in the AI trade could initially lead to a fall in Bitcoin and other risk assets, but that it might later benefit from a new round of money printing. In this environment, investors are re-evaluating their risk-reward ratios, maintaining a cautious stance across markets.

Looking ahead, the intensifying competition in the chip sector and further developments in artificial intelligence will be crucial determinants for the trajectory of the KOSPI and other technology-heavy indices. Monetary policy decisions by global central banks and geopolitical events will also continue to influence market direction. Bitcoin's response to traditional market volatility and its positioning as a risk asset will be closely monitored.
