Karen Shaw Petrou, a prominent U.S. financial policy analyst known for her influential work on banking regulation and public policy, died on February 21, 2026, in Washington, D.C., at the age of 72. Over several decades, Petrou became one of the most respected independent voices analyzing financial regulation and the structure of the banking system.

Born in New York City in 1953, Petrou began her career at Bank of America in 1977. By the age of 27, she had become a vice president at the bank’s Washington office. In 1985, she co‑founded the advisory firm Federal Financial Analytics with her husband, Basil Petrou. The firm provided analysis and strategic advice on legislation, regulatory developments, and public‑policy issues affecting financial institutions in the United States and abroad.

Despite gradually losing her vision due to retinitis pigmentosa, Petrou continued to play a leading role in financial policy debates. She frequently testified before the U.S. Congress and spoke at central banks, regulatory agencies, and international institutions. Her work was widely cited by policymakers, banks, and major financial media outlets.

Petrou was also the author of the book “Engine of Inequality: The Fed and the Future of Wealth in America,” in which she examined how U.S. Federal Reserve policies may influence wealth distribution. Through her research, commentary, and advisory work, she left a lasting mark on discussions surrounding financial regulation and the stability of the global banking system.
