JPMorgan: Inflows to Certain DeFi ETFs Stalled as Competition Mounts
According to a JPMorgan report, demand for decentralized finance (DeFi) focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which led crypto ETF inflows in May and June, stalled in July and August due to intensified competition. The bank indicated that this reflects a shift in market dynamics.

Global investment bank JPMorgan's latest analysis reveals that exchange-traded funds (ETFs) based on certain decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, which recorded significant inflows in May and June, experienced a substantial slowdown in demand during July and August. The bank attributed this stagnation primarily to intensifying competition, particularly from regulated centralized exchanges. This development highlights shifting investor preferences and increasing regulatory pressure within the digital asset markets.
JPMorgan analysts, in a report led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, underscored that interest in such ETFs, which showed some of the strongest inflow performances relative to assets under management among non-Bitcoin crypto funds in May and June, diminished in the subsequent two months. The report emphasized that decentralized derivatives platforms are facing mounting competition with the rollout of U.S.-regulated crypto perpetual futures products. This situation is expected to shift trading activity away from decentralized venues, which carry concerns around licensing, compliance, and investor protections, towards regulated centralized exchanges.
This slowdown signals a broader restructuring within the crypto market. Increased competition in decentralized derivatives markets and regulatory developments are prompting investors to direct liquidity towards more transparent and supervised platforms. The prices of relevant tokens (HYPE) also declined in response to this news, reflecting market concerns. Specifically, while negative pressure is building on the growth prospects of some altcoins, this could reduce overall risk appetite in the short term.
In the broader economic and political context, the introduction of regulated crypto perpetual futures products in the U.S. is reshaping the structure of the digital asset market. As institutional investor and corporate treasury interest in digital assets grows, this is leading to a redistribution of capital flows between decentralized and centralized platforms. In 2026, the passage of additional regulations, such as the CLARITY Act, is expected to further enhance institutional adoption and mature the market.
JPMorgan analysts anticipate that decentralized platforms may face significant challenges in maintaining their market share in the coming period. A continued shift of liquidity towards regulated platforms is expected, while the value of associated tokens is tied to platform activity and transaction fees. Therefore, any loss in trading volume would be critical for token demand and valuation. It is suggested that while regulated infrastructure could improve the quality of crypto liquidity in the long term, it may, in the short term, exert pressure on existing altcoin narratives and lead to a market reshuffle.
