Joybuy launches in UK: China's 'Amazon' aims to disrupt retail
JD.com’s Joybuy has launched in the UK with same‑day delivery and a JoyPlus subscription, signalling a direct challenge to Amazon and local retailers.

JD.com has rolled out its Joybuy marketplace in the UK as part of a simultaneous launch across six European markets, positioning the platform as a one‑stop online retailer offering electronics, home appliances, beauty and grocery ranges. The move marks a clear bid to compete with Amazon and other fast-growing e‑commerce players in Europe.
According to company announcements and Reuters reporting, Joybuy went live on March 16, 2026 in the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. The expansion follows JD.com’s wider European moves, including the €2.2 billion agreement related to Ceconomy, and reflects a strategic push to internationalise revenue streams.
Joybuy emphasises speed and logistics control via its JoyExpress network, offering same‑day delivery for orders placed by 11 a.m. in covered zones and next‑day delivery for later orders, supported by fulfilment hubs in Milton Keynes and Luton. The platform also launched a JoyPlus membership and features branded stores to attract shoppers with both price and convenience promises.
The arrival of a major Chinese retailer with owned last‑mile capabilities raises competitive pressure on Amazon, Argos and supermarket online arms, particularly in categories where fast delivery and branded partnerships matter. It also underlines a broader trend of Chinese e‑commerce groups expanding abroad to offset slower domestic demand.
Market observers expect Joybuy’s initial growth to hinge on how effectively it balances aggressive pricing with logistics costs and regulatory scrutiny. UK retailers may face margin compression in the short term and will likely respond through targeted promotions, faster fulfilment upgrades or partnerships. Over the medium term, Joybuy’s success will depend on customer retention, profitability of the JoyPlus model and regulatory developments in Europe.
